Guest tony78_280z
Not sure where to post this as it has to do with my stock Z oil/temp gauges, but trying to get them to talk to a chevy sender. I've tried 3 oil pressure senders, and 1 temperature sender that have been aquired via salvage. The three oil senders are off of various chevy/GM vehicles, including the sender that came with my motor. And the temperature sender is off of a toyota. And none will get my needle to even twitch. When I unplug the sender and run the wire strait to ground the needle climbs slowly and steadily to the top. I find it hard to believe all four senders I've tried are no good. I supose it is not completely impossible. I opened up the gauge to perform some exploritory surgery. I can't understand how the thing even works. Strange levers that are wrapped in a very thin white wire somehow makes the lever bend moving the needle. Anything else for me to trouble-shoot? Is there anything I've overlooked, forgotten, or simply didn't do right? Why wont it work? I would prefer using the stock Z guages (with white faces of course) and if I could get the needle to move then I can tackle getting it calibrated. And no, I don't have the Z senders anymore See BARACU's reply here
fl327
The datsun senders work differently than Gm/Ford type. I tried to use a chevy one on an L6 once and had the same issue. I would look into getting adapters to run the datsun sender units. Autometer and many other places have these adapters.
Guest tony78_280z
Mr BARACU claims to get the gauge to speak to the senders. See BARACU's reply here Oh well.. Tell me more about these adapters. I don't recall seeing them in a JEGS or Summit catalog. Where do I look to get them? They adapt GM senders to use Datsun Gauges? Sounds rather specialized to me. Bartman
Is it difficult to find stock Datsun sending units? I guess I was lucky enough to just be able to remove them from my old engine and put them in my LT1. The sending units have the same thread as the Chevy units, so it installed in the existing mounting locations and they work great .
Guest tony78_280z
My Z motor was disposed of before I was done with it. It sat in the pit room, for a few months and another "family member" thinking it was junk hoisted it up with the tractor and hauled it off. I think it is in a pit someplace "up back", buried under more junk and dirt. There were alot of good parts on that motor too. Zs are rather rare around here. When I make it out to St Louis, rarely do I come accross a Z or ZX that I could take parts off of. Anyone got some sending units they'd like to see in a good home? I supose tomarrow I may grab a shovel and a treasure map to go play amateur archeologist and try to find the lost motor of L28. Think the senders would still work after a year left to the elements and the dirt?
fl327
The senders are pretty cheap. The oil sender is the same thread as chevy, it threaded right in to my L6 when I tried to use one. Maybe try classifieds? Im pretty sure someone here has a million of those senders lurking around,.
