Drax240z
I have no idea where to post this, so here it is. I am in the process of designing a flowbench so that I can use it to do some intake manifold design work. I'm wondering if any of you guys out there have ever built your own flowbench, or used one enough to fill me in on a few details. I have access to sensors galore, and a datalogging system that will be incorporated with whatever I build. What I am wondering right now is what probes would be useful. My ballpark plan right now is to simply use a manometer (or equivalent high tech sensor most likely) measure pressure before adding any object, and then compare that to the same reading after the air is flowing through the object to be tested. From there the pressure drop should give me a good idea what type of restriction is caused by the object being tested. Anyway, if anyone has any wisdom to impart on this subject I'm all ears! Thanks. Kevin Shasteen
Vizard, in his book on how to modify SBC Cyl.Heads talks a bit on his flow bench & how he modified it to interface w/his computer to crunch the numbers as the air is flowing thru whatever is being tested. He also added a swirl meter-see his book on page#24. That is about the extent of my knowledge. Sounds like an adventure-keep us all up to date as your flow bench comes together. Guest Luigi
Do A search for AUDIE technologies. They make some parts that will make your life alot easier. If you cnnot find it try some of the circle track stuff. Not an ulitmate bench by any means but repeatible and affordable. Luigi
aviatorx
Vizard has a regular article in Sports Car (?) magazine, and in this months issue (or last- sorry but I read it at the local bookstore ) he reviews his flow bench philosophy and porting priorities....I think he even touches on how to design a home built bench....and I believe he even uses a wet-vac for a vacuum source..... pparaska
In my experience, you can get all the info that David Vizard has in all of his old and new magazine articles in his book: "How to Build & Modify Chevrolet Small-Block V-8 Cylinder Heads" It seems that each article I read in the mags by him is just an excerpt of info in that book. Not a slam or anything, he's definitely one of my favorite automotive authors (if not my favorite overall). Just wanted to pass along the info. Info on general head porting is in that book (although it tends to be SBC specific), and he describes the flow bench in that book if not his other books as well. Kevin Shasteen
Last night when I posted about the Swirl Meter addition, in Vizards book, I couldnt remember which of Vizards books had the info on how to build a home made Flow Bench. Turns out that it was the "How to Modify SBC Cyl.Heads"...see pg#68. Kevin, (Yea,Still an Inliner)
