pjo046
I am going to buy a honing-tool today, to hone my turbo-block a bit since I am installing new forged pistons. I have to buy the honing-stones separate. I can either get 120 grit(Rough), 180 grit(medium) or 280 grit(Fine). What should I get?
PeterZ
I recommend buying stones to match whatever piston ring material you are using. Talk to your local machinist for what stones go with what ring. (Cast rings use different stones than moly-coated rings etc.)
dr_hunt
400 to 500 grit, 28 to 32 degree crosshatch. If you go 280 the rings will be shot in 100 miles or less, that is way too rough for any ring. I think most ring manufacturers recommend 400 grit as a min for finish honing.
80LS1T
Now machine shops are using what is called a "platue"(sp?) stone. I think it is even finer than a 500 grit. Basically from what I understand there is very very little break in time for the rings with this stone. And ya none of those stones you mentioned are even close to what should be used. I would also recommend atleast a 400 grit stone. Guy
