Guest dirtbike daron
first off, im trying to get to the exhaust and intake manifold bolts to remove both of the manifolds on an 83 n/a 280zx. i thought it would be a good idea to remove the exhaust a little so i could stick my hand in there with a box end from underneath. theres three bolts on the bottom that attach the exhaust manifold to the exhuast pipe and i cant manage to muscle them off. they arent special nuts that lock are they? please help me thanx. zcarnut
They are a lock nut but usually it’s rust that makes disassembly difficult. Soak them overnight with WD-40 or similar. Use a 6-point box end and watch your knuckles. However, the best way to remove these bolts is from below the car with an impact wrench and a long ½" drive extension. Here comes trouble
Steve's advice is right on..and soaking with WD 40 is very important...if you have not the impact wrench ... then a 1/2 inch ratchet with a 3/8 inch socket reducer to use 3/8 extension(s) and drive sockets. A swivel may come in handy when you cannot get a true straight shot with the extensions and drive socket........ I pulled a 280 L6 head once and broke about everything imagineable including all 3 exhausts nuts and 3 head bolts and the exhaust pipe still stuck as welded. I wound up pulling the engine and scrapping the (pita) motor. fortunately I had a better motor from the Tomahawk project http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/larryjohnson97438/album?.dir=/392a
Guest Aaron
Sometimes you may have to heat them with a torch then hit them with the impact, but usually they break before you get that far.
Guest Want aZ
WD 40 is ok for light work...if you really want to get serious use PB Blaster...Great stuff, have almost worked miracles with this stuff. After 21 years in the heavy construction arena it pay's for itself many times over... Damon
Here comes trouble
I will try PB Blaster....used a industrial product a guy brought home in his lunch bucket... the supply did not last long......it actually smoked while working and it worked
