2003z
I've got my rear struts totally disassembled to do a rear 280zx brake conversion, and have all the necessary parts, but am trying to figure out how to remove the drum brake backing plate and dust shield from the strut tube assemblies. Do I just unbolt the 4 center bolts, unbolt the 2 10mm bolts holding the brake assembly at the bottom and cut off the 2 welded rivets at the top to remove them? or is there more? thanks! (every brake conversion thread seems to assume this portion is obvious.)
auxilary
you will need to do one of two things: 1. cut through the backing plate with a sawzall or plasma cutter and cut it in half 2. remove stub axle nut in back (240ft lbs torque), separate stub axle and joint, and remove backing plate since it's wedged between the two Here's a link to 240sx conversion install, which is the same principle: http://zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/Calipers/zbrakeupgrade.htm

I've got the stub axle out already (the shop really f'ed up the threads on it though. So much for paying a professional. Guess I will get to work! 2003z
I chose #2. They were fairly rusty, so it appeared as if the backing plate was part of the strut tube base. I used an air chisel and it busted right loose.
AK-Z
Where did you ge the caliper mount? I want to do a disc conversion as well ( I always want to do everything to my car). Is it just removing the rear drums, shields and back plate and bolt the adapter, caliper and discs? N/M about where you go the mounts.
