Guest traub83
I have a 78 280z that im building up, in fact i just got the car a few days ago and i ripped out the motor and 5 speed it had already and am getting it all ready for body work and paint... Now that aside I am planning on dropping around 500hp into this Z with a vortech blown 350 motor and a t56 tranny. I will be using the JTR install kit and aluminum radiatior and all those goodies.. My problem is the rear end on these cars. I wanna keep the IRS bad. But how much power can these r200's hold? is there anywhere where I can buy ring and pinions for these and what about posi lockers or LSDs?? The next problem is wheels has anyone done a 5 lug swap on these cars and if so what all did it entail?? Id love to go to 5x4.5" bolt patters. and finally on a stock 280z whats the widest wheels i can get underneth it without cutting and hacking?? is it possible to get a 10" wide wheel in the back?? Sorry for the noob questions and all, I did a search and didnt find too much for what i was really looking for but i did find some nice reads that I will be reading for a few hours to get caught up on these cars as this is my first time actually ownin one and first build but i have always liked these cars so basically im clueless to the datsun/nissan lingo and stuff for now lol... so help me out guys if ya can. Thanks RJ
Michael
In a matter of hours this thread will be filled with posts, some dignified and some less so, enjoining you to search more thoroughly, as all of your questions have been answered multiple times before. But briefly, the R200 should be OK for your application; the weak link is the half shafts and their U-joints, for which there are relatively straightforward solutions. The 5x4.5" swap has also been done n-number of times before, and there are several members (vendors) on this site who sell stub axles and related components to enable the swap. Wheel/tire choices depend on whether you do the coilover swap, what ride height the car will achieve, the tire diameter and other specs, and your choice in aesthetics. So, the point is that the rear drivetrain and suspension is the least of your problems. First worry about doing the actual swap and achieving your desired 500 hp. Then worry about traction, halfshaft breakage and so forth.
Guest traub83
Thanks Micheal, well the 500hp mark is already set in stone as the motor is already built as is my t56 tranny, its just now getting the car in order and such to get it ready to put the motor in. I want to keep the stock setup for suspension just get some new coil springs and adjustable shocks. the 5 lug swap i will def be doing as well as a bigger brake swap. the width of the wheel is what im concerned with cause id love to get a set of 10" wide wheels under it but i figured id ask before buying and not bein able too and visa versa... the coil over swap? is there any chance you could link me to more info just in case i dont find anything on the search. Guest traub83
thanks wpn that solved some good questions i had about an lsd posi unit.. now basically i dont even think im going to go to the 5 lug swap, ive found some killer wheels for the stock pattern so now im gonna figure out a way to beef up the brake system, im gonna get the 300zx rotors and the toyota 4x4 calipers for the front and do that swap but for the rear i donno what im going to do but i know the stock brakes have to go cause i hear nothing but bad about them and while im there i might as well upgrade it a lil...!! wheelman
Welcome to the board. What is the intended use for your car? Street, drag, AutoX, Road Racing or combination? The rear brakes can be swapped out for disks, in fact there are several kits from various vendors that make it a realatively easy project. Again do some searching and you'll run across many posts discussing it as well as posts about swapping the half-shafts for CV axles and upgraded stub axles. These changes can pretty much make the rearend stout enough for 500HP. Wheelman
Guest traub83
Thanks man, the intent for my car is mainly street and highway setup. t will see a lil track time in the 1/4mile but not enough to write home about... mainly just a nice cruiser that can run and handle with the best of them on the interstate ya know!!! wheelman
Thanks man, the intent for my car is mainly street and highway setup. t will see a lil track time in the 1/4mile but not enough to write home about... mainly just a nice cruiser that can run and handle with the best of them on the interstate ya know!!! In that case 500HP is going to be way more than adequate and if you can avoid the very hard drag race style launches the R200 will hold up just fine. I would swap the half-shafts for CV axles and possibly put in new stub axles just for peace of mind (I did) but they probably aren't really necessary. It is the launches that kill them after all. My guess is you'll be very traction limited which saves the drivetrain parts but takes its toll on the tires. Put sticky drag radials on it, do some hard launches and things will start to break, so wheel spin is your friend. Sounds like it's going to be a real beast, post some pictures when you get the engine in. Have you made sure there's enough clearnace for the Vortech yet? Are you using EFI or a blow-through carb setup? Wheelman
Guest traub83
it will be a carb setup, the car i just got and im actually looking for another z car to make a pure drag race one but this will prob be a 2 year project for me but i will post pics on all my upgrades and such as time progresses.. yah i will run some nitto 555 extreme drag radials for tires so hopefully they will hook up half way decient.. Im still debating on a color to paint it im a real big mopar sub lime green fan and im leaning towards painting it lime and trim it in black, but i donno honestly it will have to be a deadline decission on a color to paint it..
