rp975
Hi, I am wondering if the US 280z came out standard with wider than 5" width rims? If they did I am after info to give to my engineer to warrant going to a 7" width rim. In New South Wales , Australia, we can only increase the rim width legally by 1.5" if the car is after 1973 and under 1200kg. So I am trying to find info on the later s30 280z, or if there was a turbo s30 that had wider rims than 5" . My car is a 1974 260z.
Guest 81na ZX
Don't exactly know what your asking but: s30 Steelies: 14x4.25, 14x5, or 14x5.5 79-83 280ZX Steelies: 14x5.5 79-80 280ZX Iron Cross: 14x6 81-83 280ZX NA: 14x6 81-83 280ZX Turbo Snowflake and swastika: 15x6 84-85 300ZX: 15x6.
Here comes trouble
my 1978 shop manual lists both a steel and aluminum wheel @ 14 X 5 1/2 inches and no turbo model offered
rp975
Thanks guys, What I am trying to do is find documentation that would show if there was a 5.5" rim width offered on any of the S30 z cars. This way my engineer can show that the suspension parts are the same part numbers and that the Nissan engineers allow for 5.5" in rim width, then there is some precedent . Our rules state that we can widen the rims up to 1.5" from standard if the car is after 1973, before 1973 you can widen 2". This is if the car is under 1200kg. There are different rules for different weights. My 260z is a 1974 model, came with 5" rims and I am wanting to use a 7" rim width. So now I have to find part numbers for the suspension to show that they are the same for the 260z and the 280z. Thanks Rob

Here comes trouble
late year 1974 260 Z's had the 280 suspension while the early year 260 Z had the 240 suspension. The 280 strut tubes are longer and slightly bigger in diameter (2.08')than 240 (2.04) strut tubes..Maybe someonelse can be more specific
Phantom
You can refer to a Nissan Service manual, a Chiltons repair manual or even the car owners manual. They all list the stock wheel and tire sizes. I know the 280Z's, S30's made from 1975-1978 in the US, had 5.5" wide 14" diameter rims stock. Here comes trouble
This may help since your question about rim width motivated this thread http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=103372
Pop N Wood
According to the book "The Z-Series Datsuns" by Ray Hutton (ISBN 0-947981-02-0) the S30 series cars had wheels that were "4.5 inch wide (later 5-inch steel and post-1977 British market 260Z, 6.5-inch light alloy wheels)" So if you can verify the 6.5 inch alloys, you should be good to 8", right? rp975
Thanks , I just got a 280z manual online that states 5.5" rim width, and I am waiting for a parts list to arrive in the mail. With the "Z-Series Datsuns" I will have to see if I have this book at home or where to get one. Thanks again. Rob
