Amp meter/ volt meter?

Recommended Posts

in the 280zs they changed to volt

Yep, I was half asleep when I first read loy's response, I thought he stated "ZX"

There are some differences both cosmetically and may have some differences in the actual wiring, although the '76 gauge and '77 gauge look identical to the wiring hookups, just different faces. It doesn't look that hard to change the faces, if necessary. Get a wiring diagram of what you are going to swap into, just to confirm.

All the 280s I have seen don't have combination guages (oil-amp / temp-fuel) I have no problem wiring them up, just finding a voltmeter in combo. Since I don't know much about earlier Zs it could be that the ones I have seen are all ZXs. Would that make a difference?

Maybe I'm not understanding your post, but that's how they came from the factory. Temp/Oil and Volt/Fuel. Not sure on the ZX ones though. You could swap out the temp for a volt and vice-versa, as each guage is a separate movement, only sharing the backlight and common housing. FWIW, be aware that the 280's had the 'idiot light' built into the voltmeter.

I'll try and find my camera to take a pic.

I obviously haven't explained my problem very well, so here goes:

I have a Z31. In the stock Z31 there are two openings in the dash for the volt meter and the oil pressure guage. The fuel and temp are (were) included in the instrument cluster with the speedo and tach. I removed the stock inst cluster and installed an autometer pro comp speedo and tach. I removed the stock Z31 oil press and volt meter and used combination guages like those from a 240Z where all four guages (Temp-Oil Pressure and Ampmeter-fuel) go into the two holes. However I can't find a combination with a volt meter instead of an ampmeter. I need to know if a 280 Z has a voltmeter-fuel guage combo. All I have found in local junk yards are 280ZXs and they all have three holes in the dash one for the volt meter and one for the oil pressure. the third is a clock. The 280ZX fuel and temp are in the instrument cluster like a Z31. I'll post some pics of my inst cluster when I find them.
