Guest TheHappyHeathen
My car is creaking and groaning from the rear axle, and 'popping.' I want it to be something else, but I have a feeling it's the CV joint. What the hell should I do, I don't even know if I can afford to start replacing drivetrain stuff. Is there any way I can find out exactly what part of my car is making this noise so I can keep from wasting time and money taking **** apart. skipzoomie
Jack up the rear of the car. Place it on secure jackstands. Place the transmission in neutral. Turn the driveshaft by hand. Listen for the offending noise. This should narrow the area of the problem.
Guest TheHappyHeathen
Thanks man, this is the first time I've got actual mechanical advice on this page, most of the time it's hazy advice. Thanks
Gollum
i don't know what it's called, but mechanics in the past have used little systems with multiple mics with magnets on them so you can stick the underneath the car so they can drive the car and listen to where the noise is coming from. They're normally used for suspension noise since you many times have to be on the road to create the noise. If it's a true drivetrain issue then skip's idea should work fine, but it's something to look into.
