TheNeedForZ
Can NA 280ZX distributors(no matter what year) swap into early Zs? mine is a 76 280Z I have searched but nothing is said about it. Why do I ask? I found a guy who's selling 2 zx distributors, one from a 80 zx, one from a 83 zx. Both distributors look complete and in good condition, but the 80 zx distributor(D6K9, module E12-80) is sold at a higher price and is said to swap into early Z's The 83 zx distributor(D6K8,he says "standard brand module") is sold at a lower price the guy didn't say the 83 dist. can swap. I emailed him and asked if the 83 dist. can swap into my 280z, he said "I don't think so" I also checked Joseph R. Demers' website http://www.jrdemers.com/ Joseph said he swapped a D4K8 into his 240Z but didn't say if D6K8 or D6K9 will swap into Z's What do you think? Thanks for the help. BTW why does electronic ignition give "hotter sparks" as told by a member in an old thread?
JMortensen
I have a D6K8 in my car. Works great. Came out of an 80. The later distributor had a 4 plug module that hooked into the computer and would retard the timing under certain circumstances IIRC (what those circumstances are I really don't know). My understanding is that any 2 plug (E12-80) will work. Not sure if you can put the E12-80 on the later distributor and just not hook up the other connections... Hotter spark? Most likely because you can jump the ballast resistor and get a full 12V to the coil. With points you need to run the ballast because 12V to the points fries them.
