Quieting the Blue Bullet

I've had a pair of Flowmasters on my Z ever since the unfortunate, uh, 'uncanny resemblance' incident. :icon52:

 

They have always sounded great throughout the RPM range, ending with an intimidating high pitched howl at redline. :twisted:

 

Alas, I have a long road trip planned and the truth is that in fifth gear at legal highway speeds it drones in the car. After a couple hours it becomes too much. Fortunately my small tank requires gas stops every three hours. Still...

 

At the San Leandro meet/Kit Car show I scrutinized Joey's LS1 two-into-one exhaust. A pair of small glass-pacs under the floor, then a 'Y' bringing the two pipes into one and a single conventional muffler in the rear. It sounds great and he claims it's very quiet on the freeway.

 

A very, very nice car and an extremely clean swap. :hail:

 

So, taking a note from Joey, my Z went under the knife, err, torch today. The whole center section is going to be redone and a pair of those same baby glass-pacs will be installed. This time true mandrel bends will replace the only 'somewhat' sloppy part of the original system. The flame wielder was given instructions to tuck it a little tighter this time as well. I get tired of dragging my butt over speed bumps and I refuse to raise the car even a smidge.

 

The work didn't start until late this afternoon so the car is having a sleep-over on the rack. It should be finished tomorrow. I'll let you all know how I like it when I get it back. Anybody coming to the Vacaville meet at the end of the month can judge for themselves.

I totally understand. I had the Flowmaster "drone" right at highway speed as well. And I endured this for months, but enough was enough, and I ended up adding a glasspack (resonator) to it to shift this drone lower and out of the cruising speed rpm. I guess my age is showing when I find the Flowmasters to be too much of a good thing.

I just put a Magnaflow on my Saab and was quite surprised. The Saab has a cat, a 12" pre-muffler, a main muffler in front of the exhaust and an 18" rear muffler. WHEW! The main and rear mufflers were bad and replaced them both with a single 14" Magnaflow in place of the rear muffler. At normal driving/RPMs, the car is whisper quiet and when the boost comes on it has a nice subdued "tone". I was quite surprised. Of course the Saab 2.3 turbo is not a honking V-8 or a 300hp L28ET but it should be nice in one of those too. BTW, the Magnaflow has about a 15" tailpipe and I sure that helps with the sound too.

Picked up the car this afternoon. I haven't had a chance to try it on the freeway yet. Any freeway is at least 15 miles from Rio Vista. I'll have at least 10 hours of freeways tomorrow though.

 

Driving it around town I noticed immediately that the exhaust note has lost it's edge. :-(

 

Nothing comes without a price.
