Nearly got killed today...

No, I'm not kidding around. Call it fate but I came within a hairsbreadth of being killed. puke.gif

We went out to an import shopw today in the Supra. I'd gotten the RX7 up and running earlier but wasn't able to take it with me (battery holddown too short) so we were both in the Supra. Second car back at a busy intersection with a turn lane on my left for oncoming cars to turn. I was having trouble with the lightswitch clutch in the Supra and Deb and I were chatting some about it. Light turns green, car ahead of of me moves forward, I stall the car. Cussing i reach down to restart and look up just in time to see a FULLY LODADED CAR CARRIER careen through the intersection. He had pulled into the turn lane to go around cars stopped for the red and drove right through the intersection, no horn, no lights, just a little swerving as he cut out of the turn lane and through the middle of the intersection.

This thing was one of those carriers pulled by a pickup truck. It had at least 4 cars on it and a minivan in tow. The car ahead of me made it through the intersection, the car next to it must have to and there was apparently no car next to me. Had I not staled the car I'd have been T-boned by the F350whatever pulling that thing and all of the other cars on top. Frankly, I do not believe it would've been a survivable accident - that sucker was MOVING and we saw NO sign of braking action. We even went back and looked - no skid marks, and no accident evidence further up the street so I guess he made it. To say that we were shaken up is an understatement

It didn't really hit us at that moment but later in the day it sure did. I'm not much for dwelling on things I cannot control but were it not for a simple twist of fate and my having such trouble switching from one car's clutch to another I don't think I'd be typing this. Not sure there's a real lesson to be learned or any way I could've really anticipated this but I can tell you that I sure enjoyed the rest of the day. Lots of what-if's to consider but th ebottom line in my mind was that I got lucky, really lucky. You just never know when you're number is going to come up - today wasn't my day thank goodness. I've got way too many things I want to learn about and accomplish and I'm glad we avoided this. Whew!

Anyway, don't mean to ramble but thought I'd share the near miss - it was pretty scary! eek2.gif

:eek: now thats some scary stuff! i'm very glad you made it through blkmgk, weird how thigs work out isnt it? i'm not one to reailly have a firm belief in fate but sometimes things happen that just make you wonder the big question "what if". i may only be 19 but in the last year and a half i have learned that anything or everything can come and go in the blink of an eye. Like i aid i'm VERY glad you and the significant other came out unscathed.

At work we are madated to attend the 'Smith Driving' class every year. I have been through it about 3 times now and it is really starting to sink in (amazing since my racing days my driving habits were opposite of everything that 'Smith' teaches). Because of this I have avoided several near hits.

Sometimes it's just not your TIME

Good to still have you with us Dude.

LOL, I do lots of readng and sleeping - is why I've not got EFI on my car yet ;)

Seriously, things CAN really change in the blink of an eye. Funny thing is one of the biggest things that passes through my mind is who would've taken care of the dogs? This accident would've probably killed me and certainly hurt the woman badly if not killed her too. I've got 4dogs, 3 of whom are "rescues", 2 of which have been through some "really bad things". I'd hate to think of what might have happened to them :( These little guys are like kids to me and it's upsetting that someone else might not see them that way while clearing out my house. Kripes, I might have to write them into my will! Speaking of which, creating one has taken on a whole new meaning now  At the very least I'll try to put my wishes down on paper and have it notarized. Been putting that off for awhile, time to do it!

I'd like top think this wasn't a life changing sort of thing but maybe a little life enhancing? ;) That truck passed us close enough to throw some dirt on the car, the least the driver could've done was hit the damned horn! Would love to talk to th eguy and find out what occured...

Wow....Im glad that your car did stall....its too easy to die out on the roads.

When I was a youngen I used to be a chemistry freak and liked to make explosives(no I never blew up anyones property) and fireworks. My older sister use to always chastise my Father for allowing me to do this...he always said that its not what I make in the shed that worried him, but when I am out on the road behind the wheel that scared him the most. Too too true, I have had friends die behind the wheel and have almost been a victim myself a couple of times....damn scary if you think about it too much.

Glad to hear your ok Jim, I'd offer you good luck, but then that would have killed you, so, I donno, mediocre luck or something. Seriously, glad it worked out that way, its a trip sometimes how obviously things happen to prevent other things from happening or at least it eerily looks that way. smile.gif

Regards,

wow, the same sort f thing happened to me yesterday. i was supposed to go on a road trip with my friends to pick up a car for them. well my GF has been out of town for a week and i decided i was going to stay behind and spend some time with my GF. this was around 10 A.M.

well 8 P.M. rolls around and i can't get ahlod of them on their cell phone so stop by at her (friend) parents house to drop off a set of keys she had left in my car the night before. i was asking her mom what was taking them so long and she told me they had ROLLED the truck on the way back home. apparently they had taken the 12' flatbed trailer and my friends dad's truck to go pick up an old lincoln towncar they had gotten for free. everything went fine till on the way back the trailer started to fishtail on them. they pulled over and made some adjustments to it and got back on the road. he (the other friend) said everyting was going fine till he hit 60 and the trailer started to fishtail violently. he tried to tap the brakes lightly but the trailer forced the truck into a ditch which flipped it over on to the cab and it slid like this for a few feet. he said the only thing that kept them from rolling more than once was the rollbar on the truck and the fact that he was still tethered to the trailer by the tow chain, the hitch had come right off the ball.

the worst part was they weren't wearing any seatbelts but thank god they came out with almost no scratchs. one friend waked away completely unhaarmed but the other has either severly bruised her arm or possibly fractured it. i always wear my seatbelt and after hearing this it just reinforces that habbit two fold!

geez there are aot of thses stories on here i guess we are being watched over. It's a good thing you can't drive BLK :D just kidding but it is good you did stall i would have felt imbarrised that i had stalled it till i saw what you did.I have a story too,I was on my way back from a job site(i'm a radio repair guy)and i get to a place on this main road where there is a big dip and a curve before it.Well i saw this semi coming with the dual trailors and something looked off then i saw it the back trailor was fishtailing just a little bit but the driver must not have seen it.He just kept going and the back trailor started making the front one sway too by the time he got close to me all i could do was get on the side of the road and grip the steering wheel watching his two trailored semi fish tail from one side of the road to the other hitting the dirt on both sides. When he slid by me he was only about 1 foot from my mirror,if i had stuck my hand out the window i would have lost it.I had the window part down and all i could feel was rocks hitting my arm and hear them hitting the truck's side.I looked in the mirror after he had passed and three other cars behind me had driven in some ppl's yard to avoid getting hit.The driver of the semi got it under control and did not hit anyone or anything. But if he had hit me or anyother car on the road behind me we would not be here today the truck was loaded with rocks.

It all just makes you think when you go out somewhere, like if i take off 10 min later would i be avoiding a ticket an accident or would i be putting yourself in the middle of it?I didn't even think of it till that happend but now i think of it all the time.Oh ya BLK i know exactly what you mean about your dogs mine are the same way my only kids are my shar-pei beagle mix(zeus) and my lady's **** -zu(lexus)don'tknow what i'd do with out them.I know my mom would take my dog but it would be just killer on the dogs wondering where their owner's went.Dang i'm making my self sad have to get on a better note.It just wasnt' you time smile.gif

Well, I don't feel too bad about stalling this car. Anyone who has ever tried to drive it stalls the car on the first try if i don't warn them and even then they often stall it. This clutch grips like mad and has almost ZERO slip. Real PITA but I'm told it'll get better with time
