Guest lessthanjabo
I know this is my first post and all, and as ironic as it may seem, I have finished my sbc swap into a 1979 280ZX. Didn't use the JTR guide... or any guide, just some old school friends that have been around the block a few times. We have it running, and everything is solid, however I still need a few pieces. 1. a fan. Any suggestions? 2. Transmission cooler. I have a 700R4, and it needs a transmission cooler with a 5/16" line. The one we had was a 3/8". Suggestions again? 3. My intake manifold is a tall type, and I am using a Holley 600 carburetor. Needless to say, there is NO room for an air filter. The butterfly on the carburetor is about 1/4" from touching the hood. I don't want to spend the time (and money) right now at a body shop getting the hood cut and a scoop put on (though that is my plan in the long run), so is there any quick fix for this??? I Know there are some air filters that are smaller, and some that the filter actually circles low around the carburetor itself. Looking forward to SEZ in March! I hated that it got cancelled in Sep, but I am certainly glad that I will be there in a few months! Any other HybridZ'ers around my area (Birmingham, AL)? Thanks Jason

DavyZ
Welcome to Hybridz, your fan answer can be had with a search. True, but he's already nearly finished and kudos to him for being nearly all the way there on his own!! Not bad at all... If a Taurus fan will fit, I would recommend a 2 speed taurus or Mustang fan. You must measure the space you have between the engine and the radiator. Let us know that space is and then we'll tell you to search for the posted dimensions on the Taurus fan...lol. As far as the air cleaner is concerned, you have very few options due to next to nothing as far a gap is concerned. You can: 1) Run hoodless 2) Run a shaker style scoop (fixed to motor; needs a hole in hood) 3) Run some other style scoop (fixed to hood itself) HTH Davy
A. G. Olphart
Lessthan- Why not use adapters on your tranny cooler? As to the lack of hood space: Is it warm enough in your area that you could cut off the choke housing and affix a 90 degree adapter? Then run hose to a cold air intake/external filter? spdsk8r
This is what I did with my lack of space on my 79 ZX. It is a modified Throttle body hat from a Dodge Dakota with a 5.9L engine. I am also running a Taurus 2 speed fan.
