spdsk8r
To put everything in perspective for you, the "Hulk is the first hybridz that I built in 1988. It was a very low budget project. A 1977 280Z with a 350/t350 from a 1977 Z-28. I had a total of $1200 invested in the car. This cars claim to fame is that it is Andrew Bayley's (sp) first hybridz, before the massive body rot of course. To complete this picture for you, this Z looked like a worn out old stock Jap sportscar, faded yellow paint with primer spots all over it. Now to the story. I was sitting at a traffic light on Chicago Drive in Jenison (Chicago Drive is a boulevard) when a 1970 455 Trans Am pulled up next to me. This thing was built, and the cam was so radical that it was shaking my car. The guy sat there revving his engine, and I thought "no way". Well, the light went green just as I said "what the heck". The Trans Am immediatly had two lengths on me as I wasn't ready. I ran up to 90mph and looked in my mirror, the Trans Am was about four length behind me. The Trans Am guy was so surprised that he followed me to where I was going. He had to know how he got beat, no destroyed by a primered old jap sportscar. He was a really cool guy, we swapped stories and showed each other our rides. He was very impressed that a stock 350 ran that well. Another convert to the hybridz phenomena. Andrew Bayley
Thanks for the story Rick, Now I know why that car had such an appetite for early model Trans Am's! The first time I ever raced anybody on the street with the "Hulk" was just after I freshened up the motor (0.040" over, new cam, looser converter, yadda yadda yadda). I was the first or second year of the dream cruise and everyone was out in Pontiac "pre-cruising". Well, I lined up against a brand new (back then) C4 convertible Vette. Two you kids (much like myself... at the time) were all excited that finally found someone "dumb" enough to race them. At the time, the "Hulk" still brandished Rick's "custom" bodywork. Well, after the light turned green, I immediately pulled two cars on them then slowly started to walk even further away. I was pumped, they were pissed. Got my very first, of many, angry looks from a race victim. They wouldn't even talk to me when I tried to get them to pull over and talk. I guess their Dad's prediction of his Vette being a 9 second car was a little inflated. The next time I raced it was at Mid Michigan Motorplex after I redid the body ($50 in spray cans). My very first run was a 13.9 at 99 mph. My best of the day was a 13.6 at 101 mph. Thanks for the story. I’ve been getting more and more hyped up about driving my Z again. Went up to the garage this past Tuesday and put about five miles on her. She should be ready to go! -Andy
Andrew Bayley
For those who haven't seen it, here is a link to a picture of the "Hulk" (a name my father first coined): HULK Picture Also, you can still see the car number written on the windshield from it's last drag strip outing. Guest Fast Frog
Hey dudes!! Great story! Haven't had much action out here in western Colorado. People are too worryed about when the river's going to run dry. The blue beast has had its cover on for over two weeks.
