Jumpy Spedometer Cable

Recommended Posts

So I just drove my new Z home from atlanta....the spedometer is doing something very odd. When I'm moving it will jump up and down about 20 miles per hour. It makes a clicking sound while doing this. It almost sounded like my turn signal. At the top of it's peak it registered roughly 20mph lower than I was going. This gap seemed to varry though.

I have a t-5 tranny, and the stock 71 speedo. I believe the previous owner ordered the correct gear for the cable, I'll have to check the part numbers when I get home. What else could it be? Cable sticking? It's like I'm missing teeth on the gear. Thanks

jr, it sounds like the speedo cable. i'd disconnect it at the trans, pull the flex cable from the sheath and check it. if it looks decent, give it a good cleaning then lube it with some high temp grease and reinstall. i had the same thing happen to mine except i ignored it. eventually it snapped and needed to be replaced. i think some moisture got inside and began the deadly rust process.

Sorry to bring my old thread back from the dead...but I'm not so sure that is it. My Speedo cable was replaced in 02, Can it go bad that fast? I'd rather not spend $70 on a part I don't need.

Any other thoughts?

I'll complicate things some more here and mention I changed my rear from a 3.36 to a 4.11....What's the easiest way to get my speedo to read correct?
