Not exactly Z related, but chevy v8

Hey all, sorry to post about a non-Z issue, but I know there are some very knowlegable chevy v8 guys here, so here goes...

I just bought a 97 chevy tahoe with the 5.7L vortech engine. After driving it 170 miles home from the dealer and letting it sit overnight, I discover some lifter noise on warmup that is gone after about 10 minutes of running. In addition to that It appears that I have the really common intake manifold coolant leak.

I have had a couple mechanics listen to the lifter noise, and they both say it is a common issue with this particular engine, and that doing an oil change and running 5w30 with some lucas oil stabiliser should all but eliminate the sound.

As for the intake gasket, one of the mechanics works on this engine quite a bit, and says this is pretty much a given for this year/model of the 5.7 vortec. My question on this is how difficult is changing the manifold gasket? I have a bit of mechanical experience, have changed gaskets on older style SBC engines, but am hesitant to jump into this repair if it is a major issue.

I have a 99 Suburban with the same engine, the lifter noise is common and the oil change suggestion works wonders. As for the manifold leak, it's like changing an intake manifold gasket on any other chevy v8 except you have more crap in the way between you and the manifold bolts. Go for it you'll do just fine!

Insted of adding the Lucas to it (not a big fan). Next oil change put Quaker State 4X4 Synthetic Blend 5w30 in it and the liffter noise will go away. I have used this for many Vortech and Triton V8's with success.

Motor labor guide puts the intake gasket @...

1.7hr for upper

3.1hr for lower

w/ac add .8 hr

So your looking at 5.6 hours of labor book time.

With those quote numbers, I may just have a shop do it. I am selling the little geo storm I had been driving, thinking that the cash I get from that should cover having a shop do the work for me.
