Guest Kaz
When I bought my 260Z it had an interesting exhaust system I hadn't seen before... its has a 3 into 2 header with a twin exhaust ALL the way back to twin tips... looks like I possibly have 4 resonators or 4 glasspacks built in (not sure which). Its not too loud, but nice and throaty... So, when I got it home, I showed it to a family mechanic I've known since '92 that has been working on Zs since the early 70s and he said it was a true Datsun Motorsports Engine Back Exhaust... Header, Exhaust, whole nine... no longer available! So... know that I know that I'd really like to keep the exhaust, and protect it if possible... its in pretty good condition, but is starting to rust on the exterior surface... What are my options? Should I pull the whole thing, clean it up, and find someone to Ceramic Coat it? Is there anything else I could possibly coat it with to protect it? Thanks! johnc
I would coat the header and use Jet Hot's 2000 coating (not the Sterling). For the rest of the exhaust I would clean it up and paint it with a high temp paint. Plan on removing the exhaust every couple years, cleaning it up again, and re-painting. Paying attenting to it periodically will do more towards making it last then coating it and forgetting about it until something falls off. Love your site/products, and tidbits in Sport Z... I've seen your crazy hair in a few pictures! I appreciate your taking the time to answer questions like this! I'm expecting to have the Jet Hot done I have to send the manifold off to Jet Hot to have coated (thats a no brainer I know, just wanted to ask anyway). Any recommendations on the high temp paint? Could something like Rustoleum Professional be used? Its a rust proventative paint for industrial applications, which I would view as meaning "harsh, possibly moist, high temp, etc". Thoughts? Thanks John!
Tim240z
I have never had much luck with the parts store aerosol high temp paints. They never seems to last more that a few heat cycles. Now that said, I have only ever used them on headers, which do tend to get much hotter than the exhaust. POR-15 has a high temp exhaust coating that may be worth looking in to. No experience, but it looks promising. Tim
johnc
Personally, I never paint the mild steel exhausts I've put on my race cars. I just periodically pull the exhaust, scrub it with a scoth brite pad dipped in WD40, and wipe it dry. But I also live in SoCal so rust isn't a big issue unles you live near the beach. I'm on the other coast... but thankfully we don't use salt in the winter (not that I ever have the intention of ever driving my Z in the winter once I get her back together) but I am within a few miles of the beach... so I'm at risk for sand. The car came from Arizona and had all the surface rust/degration from life out there in the Phoenix area...

The car has shot various flames through the exhuast system since it was put together and no problems.

280z1975
I have used Por-20 (a por-15 product) thier high temperature paint and I liked the look of it. They have three different colors. I would suggest you have it sprayed on after removing all the rust methodicly as per thier other two products (Marine Clean and Metal Ready). If money isn't to much of a worry I would powder coat it. The look is great, color choices are a plenty and it's a tough long lasting coating.
