Guest Cronic
So I guess my valves are tapping pretty bad in my head - It was just checked out before the rebuild and the shop told me everything looked good, but I'll be damned if it's tapping really bad every second the motor runs. Can anyone tell me what I need to rebuild the head? Are the valves adjustable in an 83 Turbo Z?
z-ya
Does it have the P90A with hydraulic lifters? If it is a solid lifter head, you can just adjust the valve clearance. It it is a hydraulic head, you need to find out which lifters are gone, and replace them with good used ones (new ones NLA). I have the hydraulic lifters and on cold days I get some tappet noise, but once it warms up a bit, the noise dissapears.
Guest Cronic
it's a hydrolic head. I'm told that they do not make the lifters anymore, and that I should switch to a solid lifter head out of an 82 turbo engine.
cygnusx1
82's and most 83's also had solid lifter heads. Look for P90 heads. P90A is hydraulic. I also have a P90A and so far so good. Fingers crossed.
zeiss150
I think there is a post on here about how to modify your P90a head from a hydraulic lifter to solid lifters. I think its as easy as tapping in some threads and screwing in the solid lifters. (you would have to check the valve train geometry i.e. changine the valve lash pads so the wipe pattern is good). You would probably have to have the cam and rockers pollished or reground too. Or just find a P90 head . I need to get one of those myself. anyone got one lying around for .... 50 bucks:mrgreen:. Good luck. P.S. I understand that for the kind of HP you are hoping for hydraulic lifters wouldn't work well anyway.
Guest Cronic
Thanks for the advice I plan on doing a head swap as soon as I can locate one. The numbers in my sig are outdated, Im hoping for well over 400 soon enough.
