Guest mattrp
I just got my RJS five point harnesses in the mail today and I'm wondering how you guys have yours installed. I will be installing a full 10 or 12 point cage soon, but until then, I was planning on putting the shoulder strap (Y style) to the strut tower, and planting the rest to the floor with reinforcement plates and eye hooks. Does this sound like the right way to do it??? Matt 72 500Z
Andrew Bayley
The RJS 5-point I installed was the “roll bar†type. The two shoulder straps met at the metal mounting tab. I tried securing it to the strut tower, but the straps were not long enough. I eventually had to weld a bolt to the back of the cross bar behind the seat. Fits fine now. The lap belts mount perfectly using the OEM Datsun lap belt holes. As for the crotch strap… this one is close. RJS didn’t give me much room for error. With the crotch belt located 4 inches from where it goes through the seat (NHRA rules) I am about tapped out for belt material. Also, the shoulder belts have some slack... but nowhere near as much as I expected. But alas, it works and will probably save my butt in a pinch. -Andy
Guest Locutus
the Y type harness has more slack to work with in the should straps, but it should be attached to something solid like a roll bar or the floor somewhere. If you use the floor you need to weld in a plate or use really big washer to spread the force out on the sheet metal otherwise it will just rip free. The orginal datsun mounting holes have reinforcements to the sheet metal and are desinged for the stress involved there. If you can at least use those for you lap belts you will be better off. You might also consider if its tight going with belts made for the larger racers(yes they make belts that are longer for us big guys) If I remember correctly I believe Myron used the stock datsun mounts for the lap belts and ran the y harness to the orginal datsun mount for the shoulder strap. it looks nice and its pretty easy to install that way. pparaska
Seems that I remember someone saying to not bolt the shoulder straps to the floor, since if the seat gives where the straps come through, the shoulder straps would tend to compress the spine! Not a good thing!
Guest mattrp
Well, I think I have a pretty good compromise on the entire deal. For the outside edges of the lap belts I used the stock holes and bolts, perfect fit. For the lap belts that go to the tranny tunnel I used very beefy eye bolts through the stock holes and quick links. I havent done the floor yet, but it will be an eye bolt and reinforcement plate steel. For the shoulders I shortened the 7 strap to the very end and attached it to the inner most bolt on the strut tower. When the cage goes in I'll wrap it around the cage. This appears to be very secure. Thanks for all your input. Matt 72 500Z
