Dry cam

I got my 76 running on sunday with a stock 78 motor. I didn't think about it at first (till i heard squeaking), but my cam wasn't getting oiled properly. I guess the oil pump became unprimed while the engine sat (years maybe??) I've got a new pump I'm putting in tomarrow and hopefully the cam isn't wiped.Anybody have this happen before after an engine sitting for along time?

spray bar or drilled? Schneider did not put a plug in the end of my cam when they shipped it to me. Probably standard procedure. Out of ignorance I fired mine up with no plug in the drilled cam and no spray bar. Once I got it plugged up it was fine. I am sure it contributed to the short life of that cam and rockers.

Drilled Cam must have plug in the end. DOH!

happened to me last weekend...... i still need to pull the head, but anyway im not getting any oil at all to the cam towers. So my problem is most likely a misalligned/wrong headgasket, or the head has imperfections in the ports. I have a solid "hot" cam on my n42 head that i hope isnt ruined:(

So you do have a spray bar on your N42 head? I've seen cam towers switched and there's no lobe oiling either externally or internally as a result. Bye-bye cam. DAW

yeah theres a spray bar on my head. I'll eventually get the head rebuilt but i am definitely disappointed that it went to waste...

My Crane cam did not have a plug in the end. Fortunatly for me I was reading this forum and figured out to install it. Obviously the cam is drilled and I am running the spray bar also. I followed the tip in "Hot to Modify your Datsun Engine" and had the head feed oil port drilled to 1/8 inch. My concern is I have to many holes with the cam and the spray bar and that oil is basicly missing everything. But I don't know anything yet. I prey to God not to hear that "Squeeky Sound"!!!

By the By my rockers sound like a desiel engine. I adjusted them and they are quieter but still noisy. Any thoughts?

i was thinking of doin the spray bar modification too from the book but it was written in a time where oil was crap. drilled cam should be sufficient with oil nowadays. i didnt check if the cam was plugged before i put the valve cover on, is anyone sure that when they rebuild a head the do this? i guess i better just take it off and make sure anyways.

what type of plug and where exactly are you talking about. I think this engine had a rebuild (from an unknown source) that didn't know l28 engines (ie the timing was 180 out down at the oil pump/dizzy shaft)I'm all for not taking off the head, but a misalligned head gasket has crossed my mindwouldn't it seem like you would still get SOME oil out of the cam lobes or not?thanks allBrian78 engine stock (i presume - least that is what it came from)internally oiled cam

That is why I ALWAYS crank my rebuilt engines with the plugs pulled and valve cover off. I want to see oil coming out of the spray bar and cam oil holes before I fire it up for real!

DAW, I have run both a drilled cam and spray bar for 9 years. Cam and rockers still look great and my oil pressure reads close to 60 psi at 4000 rpm with a fully warmed up engine.
