Guest Jason
I just picked up an 82 zx today, and i've decided on upgrading brakes/suspension/chassis for the day when I have a healthy 383 for her. One of the car's rear rotors is worn, and I'd want better brakes anyhow. From the Motorsport Auto catalog, I couldn't help but notice how similar the 300zx and 280zx suspensions are. Perhaps it might be possible to swap in 300zx front hubs and brakes for my 280zx. The 300zx has better brakes and 5 lug hubs right? Anyone aware of any major differences between the two, or see any obvious problems with this before I head off to the junkyard? -Jason
BLKMGK
I've actually got 300ZX spindles, rotors, and Toyota calipers waiting to go on my Z. Guy out in Washington State sells a complete kit to do this. A bonus is that you get a wider selection of wheels you can run alal Mustang, Supra, 300ZX (NA only due to width). etc. etc. URL is -> http://www.fonebooth.com/brakes.html Mike - this is what I've got for mine
Mikelly
Jim, so you have about $450 in them total? You realize you could swap them in with your factory hub? That would allow you to keep the four lug (and your nice Panasports), but use the new rotor and caliper. BLKMGK
I don't think so - these are 5 lug hubs up front with 5 lug rotors. 5 lug rotors for the back as well. I've also got the spacers for these rotors in the front etc. Truth be told I've not pulled it all out of the box and laid it out yet as I'm not quite ready to put it on. It cost a bit more than $450 as it included all 4 corners, studs, spindles, rotors, brackets, pads, yadda yadda yadda. He cut me a deal but I don't recall the exact price - could probably dig it up in E-mail though.. Was probably closer to $800 fully done and ready to go and I don't think it was the baseline setup. Got a moustaceh bar for an R200 swap while I was at it Now I just need an LSD!

The Z31 does have better brakes but not 'good enough' to haul down a 280z/280ZX with a sbc consistently from 140mph-60mph on a typical roadtrack without fade/overheating/rotor stress IMO. Now many may not see that closing speed differential and the Z31 setup might work fine for them. I went thru Puhn's brake calc's and even a 12" rotor is overheated. The 300 hubs will go on a 280ZX strut and I"m not sure how Mike's Z31 brakes bolt on but he certainly has some nice setups (checked them all out once, thanks Mike). Due to the need for more rotor for my needs I ended up creating a bolt on 13" brembo rotor/PBR caliper (v. similar to Baer racing packages) package on my 280ZX. utilizes a slip on rotor design (v. easy to service trackside or anywhere, the OEM design bugs me for serviceability). The brake pads can be changed in 10 minutes including time to remove your wheel etc. I got my first serious test in at Thunderhill as part of Mt. Shasta's event and was consistenly braking a the last brake marke OR beyond diving into the corner. THis with 'street' KVR carbon fibre pads, saving the Hawk Blue's for when I'm a little more skilled driving to utilize that edge. I've yet to weigh my final setup but from the prior weight's I took during design it should be same weight or just a hair heavier than stock which really pleased me considering I'm running 16x8 rims/225 treads (245 for track), 13" rotors etc. Some calipers I weighed checked in at up to 10lbs or more. The PBRs I'm using are ~2-3. [This message has been edited by Ross C (edited July 22, 2000).]
BLKMGK
Can you give details on your setup or possibly write a tech article? I've gone with Miuke's setup but I'm sure others are still pondering options. The more brake the better so far as I'm concerned
Cyind
ya Ross, how about part numbers and url's which booster and master do you have.
