My next tires

I trust tire stories about as much as fish stories . Or someone thinks all other brands besides his are garbage

Does this sound familar

As you can see they do pretty good.

 

Also Julian Edgar writer for Autospeed, liked them on his R34 Skyline . Based on past articles, I say he gives a fair judgment . He breifly mentioned that the handled well on a turbo 280z.

I had a set of 520s on my Z and they are good tires insofar as they roll nicely. Poor traction and mediocre wear. I'm never buying them again, or a tire that people compare to it smile.gif

If you want a round tire that rolls and lasts a long time I'm sure it's fine. But if you want performance they seem to be far from great.

Well I like to research things a fair bit before buying, it comes from a tight budget . Anyway I was stuck on a set of Yokohoma A520's a cheap good tire that the weekend autoX guys love . However what dragged me away from this desicion was the new Kumho Ecsta, the have alost the same grip and have excellent tread wear of 320 .

I've REALLY enjoyed these inexpensive perf. tires. They're the Dunlop W-10's. Not at sticky as my all time favorite Michelin XGTV's but tons cheaper. I've even purchased my last 6 from tire rack at ~73.00.

Treadwear is about what I expect from a V-rated tire. It's quiet and sticks very well!

I run 205/55-15's on the Snowflake turbo rims.

I have avs intermediates now..... Traction is much better than the 520, but still not super sticky. They're cheap and so far they're wearing well on my 88 turbo(even with some dragstrip time on them). They're only marginally more expensive than the 520s...

I always used falkens on my 85, they were gumball tires and stuck like mad and they were quite cheap, but they always wear very fast.

You might want to check into the Bridgestone RE730 for a good, cost effective tire. They are super grippy and fairly inexpensive compared to some of the larger names!

I've driven on a few lately including firehawk sz50's, intermediates, AVS-S1's, and some other goodrich as well as the Advan (A032R's). I just got the AVS-S1's and am quite dissapointed, poor traction and very 'squealy' on limits. I loved the SZ50's but thought I could get a better/equivalent tire cheaper (tirerack had S1's on sale).Well I couldn't.SZ50's were a 'sleeper' tire that wouldn't break free when others I've run have and given the attention getting squeal (I like keeping it down/sleeper) SZ50 still gets my vote bigtime for stickiness and it has an unreal traction in the wet that I also loved here in BC. Friends in WA use them rearround (barring snow) as well as their 'wet' race tires on their race-cars. The one other higher $ one is the S02 pole position but way too much $ for me. I'm trying to sell my S1's now and will get the SZ50's again (just improved for better treadlife).

 

How much driving do you do? Tires only stay sticky so long so no point having them last more than 2 or 3 yrs IMO. I don't mind budgeting a set /2yrs, now that I have dedicated track set (A032R's) it shouldn't be a problem.

 

good luck and let us know what you like, FWIW, tires with grooves that go straight to their edge (like SZ50) have the effect of your front tires pumping the water sideways and reducing water your fronts have to run through, I've followed others on puddled highways where they got 'pulled' sideways thru puddles and my much lighter ZX just went straight thru, that really convinced me as well as a roadracing day in the wet at SIR:-) http://www.tirerack.com/tires/firestone/fs_sz50_ep.jsp

Although I'm leary of their new UTOQ of 340 AA A, when their old 'sticky' one was 220AA. Not sure if one of rating (all relative I know) of 340 really be that sticky although if it is that would kick ass. I've yet to find a tread above 250 that I felt was 'sticky'.

 

The non'EP' SZ50 does lose it's stickiness/wet traction about midlife/at 40% remaining or so many of us unaminously decided, perhaps the 'UNI-T' changed that in 'EP' (extended play:-)

Thanks guys I always like hearing about experiences from others, If anyone else has some I would be glad to hear about them .

 

My expectations are tire must last a minimum of 2 years with spririted driving . It must have a predictable breakaway point, and be stable after that point . Wet traction isn't a biggey in Sask. pretty dry .

i gave up on high tech/expensive tires street tires when i melted a set of yoko avs tires at sears point.now i run used tires that i get free on street and have a set of kumho victor racer track tires for the driver school days.no substitute for a good set of real track tires.but it doesnt rain much where i live.

Well I did some snooping around and the sz50 and RE730 look like extremely good tires . They fit into my budget, and I should be able to get 2 years out of them . I am really not one to abuse tires with big burnouts, but enjoy the ocassional 4 wheel drift . We have no high speed tracks around here, so a weekend autoX should be easier on it .

 

Thanks for redirecting me on the tires, just got to save up for new tires in the summer .
