Air Duct Diameter

Recommended Posts

I am beginning construction of my air dam for my 83 280zx this weekend. So as I am sitting here tonite watching "The 10 Commandments" with the wife (secretly planning my air dam). And I have made it to the brakes air duct ventilation.

What diameter ducts are y'all running? Or are your air dams just vented into the wheel wells? Yes, this currently is just a street car. However it will soon be used often on the autox to track venues. So, ventilation is an issue.

Ducts on a street car isn't the best idea. I tried to run some because every time I'd go to the track I'd boil the fluid. I ended up with 2" ducting that had a big 180 degree turn in it so that the tire didn't hit it when I turned during street driving or autox. So basically it went straight back, then straight up, then 180'd back down about 8" further back so that the wheel wouldn't hit it, then was attached to the strut. It was a marginal improvement at best.

Most ITS guys run 2 separate 3" ducts. You'll have to be really creative if you don't want it falling off the car or getting smashed every time you go over a speedbump. Autoxing just plain doesn't require ducts.

If you do add ducts, try to get the smoothest tube inside that you can. I got mine from http://www.mcmaster.com, I think it was originally a vacuum duct. Dryer ducts that are really floppy aren't going to flow a whole lot of air just because the side of the duct is really ridged like this ^^^^^^^^^^

So they might not be needed huh? Ok. More than likely it will be driven without the ducts for a while ( I have not upgraded the brakes yet). Chances are that when I do get around to the brakes, I will add the ducts then, if they end up being needed. But I plan on adding vents to the air dam now, so that when the time comes I will not need to cut holes.

Thanks for the input.
