Power Transistor/ignition module question

My 280zx turbo ('83) quits with no spark intermittently.

 

Has anyone replaced their power transistor with $2.00 transistor (TO3 body) from an electrical supply house? How do you do it (i.e. remove the transistor from the black plastic)?

 

Nissan will sell me a new one for $200! and a used one I received in the mail from Zcar was dead on arrival - i.e. didn't work. Mine works sometimes and often fails shortly after start-up - wait 20 minutes and then it will spark/start up again....and will run for quite a long time.
