Painting springs

Recommended Posts

Just rebuilding a front clip for my car. I'm wondering if anyone knows if POR-15 will be flexible enough to paint my springs with? Otherwise, what (if any) paint is recommended? I'm not spending the cash on powdercoating... These are a spare set of springs that I have cut a coil off of as a little experiment.

Donno about Por15's elasticity, but another product that is flexible is Plastidip. Its a synthetic rubber that can be dipped, or thinned and sprayed on (they have it in aerosol cans as well). The stuff flexes and comes in colors and doesn't chip, yata yata, heres there website technical info page:

Its available from like Home Depot as well, should work great, I was gonna do my bumpers in it, but I've seen so many Z's with blacked out bumpers I'm not sure I'm going that route now.

Just a cheap idea.

Hey, how much lower did you get with a coil cut off?

My car came with the euro Z springs, and being heavily lightened it sits pretty high. Was thinking about cutting them temporarily until I get my ground control toys to get a bit higher spring rate(They are crazy soft) and a bit lower.

Don't know, they aren't back in yet. smile.gif I cut off 1 coil, off the top of the front springs. I am mainly looking for a bit higher spring rate. From the guys that have done it, the advised method is to go 1/2 coil at a time and see how it feels. I have an extra set of springs, so I decided to go a full coil for the first one. (the actual length of the spring probably changed about 3/4" or less)

Unfortunately the car won't be running around until spring. I doubt I'll recognise it with the changes being made... it'll be hard to pinpoint exactly how much difference the cut springs made by themselves.

Lots of people say this is extremely dangerous practice, etc. I think if you know what you are doing and what problems to look for you can make sure that you do it safely. Serious problems are not going to happen unless you are radically cutting coils off IMHO.

I found some flexible bumper paint on my shelf. I am going to paint the springs with that. I'm not sure just how much this paint will flex, but I think it will move enough.

I put some POR-15 on the underside of that cowl in front of the windshield. Wife ran over a corner of it and I noticed that the

POR flakes off real easy. May have been the

amount of paint, may have been the prep to

the surface, but it seems to me that if it

is supposed to get real hard and protect

what's underneath, it'll crack.

For whatever it's worth, I read an article in some muscle car magazine about por-15 - they were sent some sample pieces of metal with por-15 on them and they bent the metal strips up pretty good and it didn't come off.

Did you follow the application instructions closely? Properly prepare the metal?
