MYRON
Its an easy swap, At least it was on my 77.. Go to the local auto parts store and buy a set of rebuilt calipers from an 84 Toyota 4x4 pickup. They may ask what engine tell them the V6. You may also want to look in the box and make sure that they are the 4 piston units... remove the old ones, take a pair of sheet metal sheers and trim the dust shield so the new ones will fit... Make sure the when you install the new ones that the bleeder valve is on the top side of the calliper. If you do not you will never be able to bleed the brakes... And the best part: take your old ones back and get your core charge back. I think that the whole process cost me around a hundred bucks!.... fl327
Thanx Myron, by the way, did you need any adaptor plates, shims or anything like that, i have a 280zx brake master cyl ready to go, does that require any mods to install as well??? and what kind of tires did you have on the 77? im afraid that my 205-70-14s with 280z six spoke mags wont fit......!!! MYRON
Your welcome... I didnt notice the the size was that much bigger than the factory units but I did this swap 6 months ago.... I am using 16x8 weld draglites so I actually have a ton of room under there... I dont remember having to use any shims or anything like that..... I have no idea about the booster. Arif
I agree with Mike. When I did the swap on my 78 I used 300ZX vented discs and I think that was the key to improved braking. I also used the 280ZX master cylinder and it bolted right up with no mods needed.
Guest scca
you must be talking about solid rotors..... IMO not worth it , a stock Z caliper can lock up the brakes just fine. why add more pistons? if your calipers dont work thats a different issue.. what z needs is larger rotors and to do this you will need a spacer to center the caliper over the rotor. ------------------ Mike mike@fonebooth.com http://www.fonebooth.com/brakes.html raceparts and brake upgrades. Guest Anonymous
The ZX master should fit rite in. I have a 70Z and the 82ZX master bolted up to my vacume with one mod. The ZX master has flanges for 4 bolts you may have to cut one of these flanges off.
BLKMGK
Heh, yeah if the brakes are lockingup now then bigger brakes won't help. Sounds like only the rear locked up though - if that's true and the fronts just couldn't hang then an upgrade is great. FWIW - I've got the solid conversion on my front end. I didn't do it and I don't like it but it DOES stop fairly well. Not hard repeated stops mind you but a single panic stop would be just fine so long as I wasn't doing 100+ Mine will be coming off "soon" I hope so I'll be letting them go here cheap cheap. No spacers for the brakes near as I can tell...
