Guest scca
i dont thing the honda stuff will fit over the z housing.... the prices look cheap when you price it separately it just adds up to more this is from memory not reality.. sleeves close to $20 nuts $20 and top perch $10 you can use a 2.5" piece of pipe in place of hte top perch but thats the cheapest part of the kit anyway... the springs are the same so find some cheaper than $25 ea and your laughin.... remember you get what you pay for... well usually - dont look at the TEP posts at zcar.com there are coilovers NEW starting at $25 ea my cheap ones are $40 ea and eibach or hypercoil are closer to $55 ea. mike
Guest Anonymous
Basic coil over kits(springs, collars, sleeves, etc) are readily available for hondas for well under $200.... Anyone ever used a cheap honduh kit on a Z? There's some on ebay for $50 - even if the springs are not usable, $50 is cheap for the sleeves/collars/seats! ------------------ Morgan http://z31.com/~morgan/s30 http://carfiche.com
jeromio
I think MikeSCCA sells the individual components, and without the springs, it comes to about $50 per corner. http://www.fonebooth.com/suspension.html
Mikelly
He knows what he is talking about guys... Trust me, there isn't much mark up at all on Mike/SCCA's coil over kit. Now, I'll warn all of you (And Mike Don't start laughing yet...) to make sure you get the right size threaded tubes, which goes back to an earlier post I made about people doing their research.. I just got that deal on my coil over tubes... They are from AFCO and work GREAT on a 240Z tube, but do not work on a 260-280 tube as those are slightly larger in diameter (Like maybe an 1/8 inch, but enough so that these new threaded collars and perches are not gonna work on my car. I'm taking them to Jim's (BLKMGK) house tomorrow to see if his will work on mine and if they do I'm gonna swap him for the ones he got from SCCA. So Morgan I'd say that you will probably not be able to use those from the hondas. When I recently bought a Sport Compact Car mag, I to was shocked at how cheap you could get a complete coil over kit for hondas. but as Mike/SCCA points out, you get what you pay for. When I called a couple of those venders, they couldn't tell me what the spring rates were or the length of the threaded tubes... Not very re-assuring there.. Coil overs are the way to go though, because you can really dial the car in for exactly how you want it set up. (Now SCCA, Now you can laugh.. I earned it.) Guest scca
well i wont laugh but you did put a smile on my face. if i sent jim ones for a 240 they will not fit a 280. i believe in a tight fit to the tube....i have 2 different sleeves here. one for a 240/280ZX and one for 75-78 Z .... if you look on the webpage i charge more for the sleeves for a 280-- they are custom made and not from any late model race car.. unfortunately hence the higher cost i had one customer once order sleeves for a 240 to find the fronts were 280 struts and the rears 240. but he didnt find this hout until his car was apart to do the conversion and no fit on 2 sleeves... so always check OD of the tube prior to ordering........ ------------------ Mike mike@fonebooth.com http://www.fonebooth.com/brakes.html raceparts and brake upgrades. BLKMGK
Hrm, I ordered for th e240 but have NOT checked the struts - I too could be in for a surprise I guess! Don't know if the struts have been sectioned either - car sits fairly low and I never seem to hit a bumpstop (shrug). BTW - what shoudl I use to lock the lower spring cup in place? I've got the adjusting nuts but nothing to lock them to keep them from creeping downwards(?). Is that an issue? FWIW guys - $400 for a 4 corners w/springs of good quality isn't THAT bad. Kripes, we spend a grand on wheels in some cases, the rest of the suspension ought to be worth $400. Oh - for the RX coil overs can run over a thousand bucks! Adjusting the damn things, in my case, requires compressing the spring and moving a stupid clip. Talk about stupid! This was already on the car when I bought it so I can't bitch too bad but the height isn't going anywhere too soon - it's damned low though. Guest scca
the nuts are either a split with a hex nut or a hex jam nut. i use a regular hose clamp on the race car below thenut to prevent creeping lower. either that or a 3" piece of duct tape on the back of the strut on the nut and sleeve. it wont move much as the top is a bearing (fronts) and just goes back and forth. over the course of a summer it may creep 1/4" or so. if not taped or clamped. mike
BLKMGK
Hrm, I've got nothing that looks like a jam nut or split nut here with the shipment. I considered duct tape Can that be put on after I've figured out the height of the car without pulling the springstrut? Or just slap a hose clamp on it? Heh, I'd buy jam nuts but at something like $16 apiece I'd probably pick the wrong part number and end up eating the cost. Heeelp! I hope to get the car to sit at the SAME height it is now - it's perfect. Hopefully this won't take too much trial and error...
Guest scca
Jim, you wouldnt have gotten jam nuts with the kit, that is just 4 more nuts and i turn the lip off so its a nut. you can get a wrench and tighten then against each other ...thats $80 for 4 more nuts turned .. so far only 1 person has asked for this... duct tapes fine....if you look at your adjusting nut closely you should see a little hex plug thats what stops it from moving. then tape over it so it doenst fall out .... if you tell me how high your rockers are off the ground i can tell you where the spring perch should sit... ------------------ Mike mike@fonebooth.com http://www.fonebooth.com/brakes.html raceparts and brake upgrades. BLKMGK
Oh DUH! I'm sorry, I didn't see the jam bolt. When they shipped them they put tape over it - I ASSumed this was to keep th enut from turning during shipping or something and never looked UNDER the tape - there's the bolt! I will give you my rocker height ASAP. I'd LOVE to be in the ballpark when I put it together Thank you! Much better than needing to buy jam nuts or taping the tube...
