SU'dCrazy280 Posted June 1, 2006 Share Posted June 1, 2006 I was getting off of the highway after driving about 25 miles averaging 80 mph in my '76 280Z. I was on the off ramp and I had barely any brakes, I had to press really hard on them and my engine turned off. And now when the car is ideling and I touch the brakes, the engine starts sounding really rough. Could this be the brake booster, or some kind of vacuum problem?? I have the Holley 4 barrell set up, I am using a 3/8 fuel line for the brake booster line (I know, its ghetto), what do you expect, I live in Montana and the parts store is far from my house. Twizted Posted June 1, 2006 Share Posted June 1, 2006 Sounds like you are thinking along the right lines. I had the same issue with my 240z. I replaced the booster and vacuum hoses. When I took off the old one I noticed that the previous (or one of) had "fixed" it themselves before by trying to use a silicone sealer on. Guess it worked for alittle while but that should just be something temporary. Doing an emergency stop on an interstate doin 80mph could be dangerous if it suddenly blew out again. Zmanco Posted June 2, 2006 Share Posted June 2, 2006 I found some hard plastic tubing that was the same ID as the vacuum line for the brake booster at my local True Value Hardware Store. It was all of .49 a foot. When I put my triple webers on the nipple was in a different spot and I didn't want to force the old hose to bend in a new way. After 3 weeks, and a few hundred miles so far it's working great. I think the key is you want something with a stiff wall so the vacuum won't collapse it. This would be much cheaper, and easier, than changing your booster, assuming there is nothing wrong with the booster of course. Good luck! SU'dCrazy280 Posted June 2, 2006 Author Share Posted June 2, 2006 ok, i got the booster out today, quite a pain in the a**, now how do I get the fricken thing opened up?? it looks like it has to twist, but i tried twisting, pounding, etc. It won't come apart!! New boosters are like 200 dollars, is the booster from a 280ZX the same? I could get one from the junkyard, but pullin them out isn't an easy task.
