Johns Car mounts question

OK guys I have a quick question. I already dropped the motor in the car using Johns Car mounts but lost my damn manual and think I missed something along the way. Did I need to modify the stock driverside LS1 mount? I know the passenger side can slide back and forth a little but I cant remember what will let it slide on the drivers side. TIA

Well you know how the pass side bracket slides back and forth a little? Doesnt the driver side also need to do the same? I may be mixing up the JTR kit and JC kit. Reason I asked is because I mocked up my tranny yesterday to figure out how Im going to build the crossmember and it was pointing a little too much to the pass side, like the drivetrain isnt running parrallel to the body, and I started thinking about the motor mount adjustments.

After I got the LT1/T56 installed using Johns Kit, the shifter came up 3-4 inches short of the factory hole. My question is this (and it may be a dumb one): Is the LS1 a longer engine as far as the distance from the water pump to the back of the motor (so that the T56 ends up in the correct position) or do the JCI LS mounts place the motor back farther?

 

Do the LS mounts mount to the crossmember like the LT1 mounts, or are they more along the lines of adapter plates that place the motor further back?

 

I already spoke with John regarding the positioning, and he indicated that not very many people use the kit for the LT1/T56 combo, not exactly what he told me when I was buying it.

 

Thanks for whatever insight that you can give me. It looks like I'm going to have to ditch the JCI crossmember mounts and use JTR mounts after all. Bummer.:(

I know of no reason the driver's side whould need to be modified - unless your car has an accident in it's history that has left the front clip area somewhat deformed. Why don't you just give John a quick call?

 

No, it wasnt wrecked and I can probably fix my problem by just loosening the pass mount and straightening the drivetrain and then tightening all back down but I thought the JC kit allowed the motor to go back and forth a lil to get the motor as far back as possible like the JTR kit. Otherwise why make the pass side slide like it does? I may call LC and see what the deal is but first Im going to go home and try to see if I can dig up my manual.

OK - The John's car engine mounts have the adjustment on one side for alignment only. The mounts are very precisely designed for the LS1 and to put the engine in a specific location that will allow useage of the other components from JCI. It does not set the engine back against the firewall but sets it about 3-4" forward to allow access to heater hoses, AC lines, etc.

LS1 and LT1 are two totally different engines. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the LT1's are very similar or identical to the older SBC's where the LS's1 definitely are not. The JCI LS1 kit was not designed to mount the LS1.

I'm with you. I recognize that the two motors are totally different; I was just wondering about the dimensions - whether they are fairly similar (within a inch or so). Somehow there is a dramatic difference in the mounts from JCI or my T56 had about 4-5 inches amputated! :)

Sounds good Phantom, just wanted to make sure I wasnt missing something. My little bit of critique on the JCI kit is the driverside frame mount was a total PITA to install and I would have really liked it if both sides were designed like the passenger side although Im sure there is a good reason they arent. Im about to pull the motor and tranny out and am going to replace the stock LS1 mount with a urethane along with the one from the JCI kit but that means I get to buy 2 sets of mounts just so I can use one out of each set. :cuss:

 

All in all a lot of thought went into these mounts but there is still some room for improvement. Of course that can be said with just about anything.

 

O yeah and where did the thread hijacking come from Dat240zg? The LT1 uses traditional SBC mounts so you would use the JTR setup.
