Guest Old Irish
Thurs. the 20th I am driving to Ellensburg WA to look to buy a 1972 240z. It has a 350 sbc a Turbo 350 and a posi rearend. Has anyone looked at this car? This is a 4 hour ride for me one way and I dont want to waste my time or $50 in gas. Can you guys tell me what to look for in a clean engine swap. I have been a member for about a week and much of the info is new to me. Some advice will be appreciated. Thanks
johnc
Its just like checking any car before purchasing. Rust is the #1 concern. After you've checked for that and feel what's visible (+25% you can't see) is tolerable, then you go on and do a basic vehicle check. Also, look at the quality of the fabrication work and a big check for me is the wiring - how well its done and does every electrical thing work. Electrical is usually done last and in a hurry. If its done right then you know the builder probably did everything else right as well.
Guest Old Irish
Thanks for the heads up,on the wiring. I am taking a magnet, inspection mirror and a flash light. Old Irish
wheelman
Have an old screwdriver also to probe the rusty places for solidity. Obviously you don't want to punch a hole through anything put a slight push to see how solid the metal is can tell you if it's just surface rust of bad cancer. What is the asking price? Be aware also that the TH350 will not make a good highway transmission. At highway cruise speeds you'll be spinning 3000-3500 RPM which gets old and burns a lot of gas. Because of this you might price in the cost of swapping a 700R4 or 2004R overdrive tranny. BTW: Welcome to the site and goodluck with the Z. Guest Old Irish
The asking price was $3,800. Well I drove over the mountain to Ellensburg and I was really disapointed in the car. They used white spray cans to paint the car. It is in poor condition inside and out. The car was really misrepresented. The search goes on. Thanks to you guys for your help. Workinprogress
Dont give up, keep searching and the right deal will present itself. I purchased a 280Z last year for 300 bucks, delivered from Olympia to Bremerton! This car has very minimal rust under the battery, which has been fixed, I'm in the process of rebuilding the engine right now. This is not the everyday deal, but be patient.
