Congratulations, that is a major score. I pay the smog cops also so I know what you are going to be going through. Go with he LT1, It will pass smog wiithout any problem and still give you hundreds of horses over what you have now. And remember it will only go as fast as you want it to go. Mine is a 76 also so if you need to read any of my smog notes let me know. Good luck.

I just looked at your photos again. Good color and it looks to be in great shape. You mignt want to pull up the carpets and look for rust.. That sunroof may have leaked unless it was stored inside. Those things are notorious for leaking after a while.

Congrats!

I would check out the gas tank and make sure it's not a rust pile on the inside! Cars that sit that long frequently tend to rot. I'd also go over the rubber in the car especially the brake lines.

When I bought my 280, it had been sitting for years also. The outside was in decent shape, but the gas tank was totally full of rust.

Hey peoples, there is a new JTR book out that goes into great detail on the LT enginnes and computers that run them. Just take your time and lay everything out before you cut any wires. I would take some steel wool to the rust and see if it will come of and show clean metal. If that doesnt work try grinder and see if you can find clean steel. If you are going to run an LT1 you should take out your tank and get a same year as the motor tank. You will need the fuell pump that's in there anyway, and it will come with all the smog junk that's required. If you do that you can get rid of the expansion tank just inside the rear fender, you won't need it. You'll find out about headers and there is an extreemly good chance that you will be running stock exhaust. don't be too quick to throw rocks at stock exhaust, you won't loose that much HP. but more important, you'll be able to drive it on the street with a current license. I had mentioned here before, first think you want to do when you get ready to make any change in that motor is call the BAR in your area. Go meet the referee who will be smoging your car and pick his brain. Things like exhaust that most guys overlook. It has to be the same "apperance" as the exhaust from the doner car that your new engine came from up to the muffler. So forget about dual exhaust. You would have to run another pipe for apperance sake to the back. If you are not carful how you lay it out that second pipe that swings out to the other side to look cool will not run as hot so it will tend to rust out first. However you can to to 3" as long as it has the same "apperance" (single exhaust) if you know what I mean. They will save you a ton of money doing it right the first time and getting by smog. You're going to have more than enough torque to light em up, and have fun. If you plan to stay in Cal. just do it the way the referee says and you will be much bettrer off. Good luck.

If they didn't get peeved they wouldn't be doing their job (God love em). Don't be too discouraged if you can't get it to pass smog. I haven't had any experience with my 260Z and smog, as the engine came right out as soon as I bought it. I had an older F.I. Prosche that was a 71. It would not pass smog besause the computer woudl start the car rich, and lean it out at high RPM, then go rich again at idle, just like it was programed to do. Exactly what the smog cops are looking for; emissions at idle. That engine got yanked also and a chevy went in. Look at it this way, if It won't pass smog you have no choice but to put another engine in it that will. The cost will be about the same by the time the dust settles, so you cal logicaly go with a SBC. They like logic, it works on em.

You put a SBC in a Porsche? Cool, that must have pissed of the Porsche people, LOL.

You Cali folks have it tough on the smog issues. In Georgia it varies by county. But even in Atlanta if the car is 25 years old there are no rules. My little 6 cyl '01 Ranger has to pass but the over rich gas guzzling 350 Z does not, go figure,

HI Deja, Yea, I had a 71 914. Before Cal. passed the exemption bill we all had to go to smog. If you REALLY want to strap something to your ass, put a SBC in a 914 Porsche. Like a rocket on a roller skate. Track down "Renegade Hybrids" in Las Vegas last time I checked. They make a conversion kit. Now THAT makes one scarry little car. Oh yea, and the best part was the Porsche folks hated me. Life was good.

HOLY CRAP, thats a ton of HP in a very light car. A roommate of mine had a 914-6 in 1972 That thing was fast enough to get yourself in trouble, can only imagine what your's was like.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I have to smile. that was before drifting was a big deal. I had the 916 wide body flairs with 10" wide treads in the back and 9" in front. It wone trophies in a few car shows. That little car could just POWER around a corner, any corner. Just go in mediun turn it and stab the gas then feather it and just smoke and power. I was a lot stupider then than I am now so I don't do that type of thing much any more. I used the 914 5 speed so first gear was way too short. I just started in second gear. As long as I didn't pop the clutch it was fine and held up as long as I had the car which was about 6 years. Once it got rollong you could just squeeze the throtle and it would light em up. No I didn't drive it in the rain. The engine was in the stock location mid engine so the balance was very nuteral. If you ever get the bug you should build one some time. Those little buggers are fun.

Funny you should bring that up. When I get my LT1 swap done I will have an extra 350. Just so happens there is a '71 914 on our bulletin board for $3500. hmmmm.

Hey 78zlt1, I got my P.C. all wraped around the axle here. Tried to respone to your message and wound up useing bad language. Anyway, about the new JTR book. It may be titled "TPI conversions", I don't remember, but it is their newest updated version specifically because the old book was geared mort toward the older carberuated engines. The new book has specific information about the LT1 in it, and addresses all the connectors, computer, and sensors as well as smog requirememts if you need to know about smog. I'll look at my book when I get home and let you know anything more that I might have left out.
