madmanadam
Hay all, doing the exhaust thing. Need to no how low can I go, meaning is there a legal distance I need between the ground and the exhaust? The original exhaust on the V8 was 2" to a way then 2 1/2" to the muff. JTR setup. Now I have Side pipes and have about 3" of clearance. Is this to low? I might be able to get 4 to 41/2" at the most. Any input would be great Thanks Adam More pic on web page stage III More to come. ------------------ Fun in the sun in shacky Washington 1972 240 V8 Topless for ever. zya8ter http://www.madmanadam.com
blueovalz
Well, I hate to see any post go unanswered, so if I put a reply out here, perhaps I can get a rebuttal. It seems a while back on the 240SX site, that a string about this came to the conclusion (via some CHIP info some anonymous sender sent) the the distance from the ground up to the bottom edge of the wheel rim is "supposed" to be the legal minimum ground clearance. Now why any law enforcement group would ever enforce this, I wouldn't know, but that is the small amount of info I gleaned from that string. madmanadam
Thanks, Terry Going to hold off on the Sidepipes and go with my existing 2 1/2" y to a single. For now and do the sidepipes after I'm up and running. What is the average clearance between the exhuast and the ground? Any input Thanks Adam ------------------ Fun in the sun in shacky Washington 1972 240 V8 Topless for ever. zya8ter http://www.madmanadam.com
Guest Anonymous
I'm not sure what the average is, I know I threw together a quick and dirty system and its to low (maybe 2-2.5 inches). I'm scrapping speed bumps rather solidly (and avoid dips as much as possible). I'm going to cut and re-route them. The mistake I made was going way under the starter and oil filter/slave cylinder on the other side. My routing was much to straight. My exhaust will have to leave the collectors, angle slightly away from the block near the T/C rod and then snake around the slave in a much higher position then it is now. I'd say as close or higher to height of the bottom of the oil pan would be a safe distance if possible. This is with blockhuggers and a T56 tranny BTW. I was thinking sidepipes as well, but after review think it can be done (well, I know it can be done cause obviously others here have done it with larger pipes that the 2" I'm running). Good luck with it. Lone ------------------ http://datsun240v8z.virtualave.net/index.html
Owen
I'm running 3inchers from Block Huggers under a T-56. But I have the pipes up front join under the oil pan and then go rearwards under the passenger side. I did this because I could get no ground clearance under the slave cylinder. You can see a picture of this towards the middle of the page. http://www.homestead.com/s30z/files/exhaust.htm I was so pissed but it was also so hilarious I had to take a picture! As for the wheel rim clearance issue, when I got pulled over for lowering, they said if I got a flat, I would be dragging the engine on the ground or something like that. Best answer I've heard so far! Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
Guest Anonymous
Lol, yeah, that middle picture where you comment about the speed bumps looks like mine. I knew it was gonna be low, but when I dropped it off the jackstands for the first time with the new engine and tranny in it I knew I was in trouble, I couldn't get the jack out from under the crossmember (old sacked springs, soon to be replaced)! I'm going to try to get it snaked by the slave as much as possible, I'll look at it this weekend, but from the snapshots I've taken I think I can just sneak it by there. Owen
I consider that the first test, and the one I have now the second one. There's gotta be a better way... Most likely will sacrifice passenger side floor space and widen the tunnel more on that side. Another low point is where the pipe goes under diff area... Maybe I should plumb the exhaust into the subframe connectors? Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
