Lowering a '75 280Z

Ok, I done due diligence and have read all the posts on coilovers, sectioning struts, lowering springs and what-not and am still confused.

Most posts are for 240's. Does the same logic apply to 280's? (Which cartridges to use where)

How about struts themselves - are they interchangable between 240 and 280?

Would probably get used struts and have sectioned and would like to konw options on what will fit.

Not interested in really wide tires, drag racing or autocrossing, just giving up a 5 Speed '83 Turbo for a V8 automatic (hip problems).

TIA for any tips here.

280 and 240 struts are not the same-the diameter of the tube is different.if you really want car super low you can put shortened 240 strut housings on 280.the ground control set up i put on a 240 used shortened tubes with mr2 cartridges in front and front 240 in rear.my car runs a ground control set up for 280 with 12" long springs.car will go plenty low but camber plates lower the car too.in the rear i have 240 upper spring cushions with coil over.i used to have some carrera camber plates in back but it rattled too much.at one time i had the eibach lowering springs -stock replacement and tokico struts-car was 1" lower and rode real good.my struts arent sectioned-car works good at race track.some of the guys are using real short coil overs and running wide tires & wheels with offset into wheel well.problem with short coils is the rate goes up fast -very rough ride.i have had my suspension too stiff before-car will push at track.you have to make up your mind what the purpose of the car is-track racing or just looking cool.

280 rear struts are 2" taller than 240 also you have a taller rubber top as well..

the fronts are the exact same length.

put in a set of good springs- susp techniques, or tokiko, and kyb or tokiko inserts and get a pair of front tops to replace your tall rear ones.

thats it....

you only need to section struts ifyou want to go lower than 2" over stock.

Brad,

If you look at my car in featured rides, and look at the stance, that stance was with Motorsport springs (1.5 inches shorter) and Koni inserts. Mike/SCCA is correct, no need to go to all that work unless you want to put REALLY wide tires on the car, which would require smaller daimeter springs and relocation of the perch.

I'd look for a set of Eiboch springs and some Tokico Premium struts, and s[pend the rest of the "Savings" from not having to do a sectioned strut/ Coilover and spend it on good bushings throughout, and an upgrade on the brakes!

Thanks all!

I have heard that earlier versions of Eibach were too stiff, lousy material, too high in rear for the 280's - depending on version.

I guess it takes a while to get right. I have Eibachs on my '83ZXT w/Illuminas and am very happy.

Since this will be for street only, I want the best ride while lowered slightly.

I heard Tokico bought Suspension Techniques - True?

I fully intend to replace all the bushings - but haven't decided on whast kind yet. If I go Poly I'd probably get the graphite impregnated ones, but this may be too stiff...

Major concern is which brand of spring - the Illuminas are a given.

Once again, thanks for your input.
