Guest Anonymous
I'm starting a 240 Z 250 GTO conversion. I purchased a 400 SBC in need of complete rebuild. I plan on 9.2 CR with Holley AL heads, four row radiator and two speed electric ford fan . My question is, will the 400 have overheating problems ? Does anyone have experience with this engine in hot locations ? Should I consider a 327 or 350 to be on the safe side.
Andrew Bayley
Yes! Your 400 is no good! However, I will be more than happy to trade (straight up... your welcome) my "cool" 350 block for your overheating 400. Seriously though, make sure you have the steam holes drilled in both the heads and gasket and you should be fine. -Andy
RickB
Ditto twice on what Andrew said.... BTW, I had a 400sb in a 69' Chevy truck that i towed, drag raced and street raced with. It didn't overheat. Drill the steam holes out, use a 400 head gasket as a template. I went 10.87@122mph with a 406" no frills SB in a fairly heavy 74' Nova. Using a healthy shot of nitrous That same car went a stout 12.17@112mph without nitrous on 235/60/14 plain Jane radials. All this with a phase 2 chevy off road solid cam and mildly ported old double hump heads. I REALLY like the 400's! ------------------ RickB@DragRacer.com 280V8 http://www.rickb.racemail.com
