Mikelly
Well I'm close to being done with welding up the 20 point cage, and completing the floor pans. Yesterday I finished tieing in the rear subframes ALA Pete Paraska Style and I started opening up the front factory frame rail boxes to see how much, if any rust was in them. I should have them done and welded up by the weekend and then I can start knocking out the rest of the sheet metal work. I also have two tubes left to push through the firewall to the strut towers and two bars Ron Jones thought of adding while he was looking over my work. After that, I'll fab up the wall and trunk lid to cover the rear cell area and prep and spray all the work with POR15 and paint. Once that is done, Its back to the task of re-wiring the main harness on the car, plumbing the fuel and brakes, and re-assembling the suspension once it gets back from Jamie T's place... Jamie, I'm almost ready to bring the stuff to you buddy!!! Mike
jeromio
Hope you'll have lots of pictures to post . Do you still have the interior trim pieces in place (headliner, the various plastic and vinyl pieces along the roof and in the back, etc.)? Will you have them in there at all when finished? I'm thinking of buying some of that asbestos mat to protect things during welding. But I have a hard time envisioning keeping it in place (magnets?). Plus it's expensive. Worthwhile? I want to keep my headliner, but it seems like it would be difficult to re-install it after the halo is in place and hard to keep from burning it if it's left in. I suppose a few hours of headscratching could reveal a way to weld things up, inside the car, but away from surfaces. Hrm. Also, are you tying the cage into the front of the chassis, ie, thru the firewall? 20 points, that's alot of points...... Oh, I have still more questions -- did you buy a tubing bender? If so, what kind (12 ton, 16 ton, vertical/horizontal) and how well did it work? Notcher or hole-saw jig? Thanks.
Mikelly
Jeromio, I have a tubing bender I got from Northern TOOls and it is a 12 ton horizontal unit. Works great, no fuss, no muss. I use an ole' Joint Jigger tubing connector and I poked through the firewall on each side... I assure you guys, Pics will be forthcoming... 20 points isn't at all hard to accomplish... All my interior is gutted, excepot for the headliner and dash and I do use a fibergkass blanket when needed. Mike
Guest Anonymous
I was wondering about how to keep from burning things up too when I get to the rollbar stage. I'm thinking a piece of metal between the bar and the roof maybe with something sandwiched behind the metal would keep the headliner ok. As far as the other stuff where the mig sparks want to fall, you might try heavy duty aluminum foil. I've seen bike customizers use it to cover the engines when they're re-raking a bike into more of a chopper for a customer and don't want to remove the engine (not the best way granted, for a custom bike, but I've seen it done). It seems like a reasonable solution to keep the sparks off surfaces that don't take kindly to fire. Regards, Lone Ps: So if we don't hear from Mike in a while, someone please go to his house and extricate him from his rollbar... BLKMGK
Just an aside - if you look in the Summit catalog over inthe 4X4 section you'll see some rollbar wrap that's cut to fit. $29 for two 5foot long pieces I believe. This stuff is NICE! Wrapped a couple of bars on my car with one piece, I think one package will do most all I need to cover. It's stretchy and uses velcro so it's a bit of a PITA to work with but you can just keep pulling it off till it's right Perfect for "finishing" up the rollbar padding and keeping the padding out of the sun. P.S. The JAZ rollbar padding is HARD as heck. I tried using a couple of half pieces for my side bars - bleah! As soon as I slide in the velcro let's go as I go over and gnaws on my leg. I'm going to get some slightly softer stuff that will wrap the entire bar instead.
DavyZ
A 20 point cage, Mike??? Man, I thought my 8 point cage was good... I get this funny visual of you trying to get in the car with sooo many criss-crossing pieces of metal in your way, that they have to shoehorn you in!! Thanks for posting pics of all the work you do on the car, and this is one that I must see! David
