700r4 hanging 1st gear...?!?!

I checked the oil in the trans a couple months ago and it was alittle low so i topped it off, maybe put alittle to much. But anyway, The past couple weeks when i accelerate kinda fast from a dead stop, it'll hang 1st gear and upshift late. it doesn't do it if i accelerate normally. Could this be caused by to much oil? Or is it whats below?

this is what consumer guide said about that model (91' chevy k2500 truck)

Automatic transmission: 700-R4 automatic transmissions may shift late or not upshift at all. The problem is a stuck throttle valve inside the transmission. (1990-92)

i checked just now and the tv cable has about 1/4" of freeplay at the throttle linkage. With the symptoms of over revving in 1st gear before it shifts to 2nd with moderate (about 1/2 throttle) accelleration, would i adjust(tighten) the cable more towards 1/8"? Or loosen it to ad more freeplay? any help is appreciated...

Here I found you a couple webpages that show how to adjust it... I'm not sure how accurate they are, I've never had to adjust it in my camaro...

http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/tvcable.htm

http://www.tciauto.com/instructions/gm_tv_cable_adjust.htm < I think this would be the best one to follow since its from TCI

Hope it helps.

Not sure if too much oil would cause a problem... If that's when the problems started I would start by draining some out to get it back to the proper level before messing with the TV cable...

Do i need to replace the gasket on the trans oil pan if i just leak some oil out? A drain plug on these would have been a good idea, because i always seem to overfill :shifty:

Man that sucks there is no drain plug... you should get a pan with one, or make your own... Well, now that you have to go all the way, when was the last time you changed the trans fluid? Might as well drop the pan, change the filter, and put new fluid in... If you don't rip the gasket, you don't have to replace it if you're just going to let some out...

Exactly how overfull it is?
