Sean 83ZXT
I'm buying an extra set of turbo swastika rims for the Z. Could I widen them an inch or 2? Would I have to modify the offset? Lastly do you think they'd fit in my stock 280ZX wheels wells fairly well?
fl327
15x6, right? i dont think you can widen them if they are aluminum, steel wheels you can widen easy. offset isnt a big deal, most places that widen rims ask you what offset you want to run. you could run 15x8, with a 235 or so and be ok. Modern Motorsports Ltd
Their are shops that will widen aluminum wheels, I'd have my 16x8 RX7TT's widened but noone offers decent treads I could run streetwise . Those 15x6's would fit fine. If you're not sure just measure how they fit now...if you have 2.25" room to your strut/springs inboard then you have room for a 2" widening. I'd push it out a bit if I could for improved handling but that's my bias. You committed to those wheels? Some supra 14 (or 15?) x7's might be cheaper, some mods to inner wheel ID needed I believe to clear some Z hubs centrebore....or you may even find costwise bolt on adaptors cheaper if you come across cheap honda type setups in your area or other more common/wider rims, just options. (not sure what cost is to widen an aluminum alloy rim)
Sean 83ZXT
Well I have the wheels on there now, they're stock. I'm just seeing if I could get an extra set widened, how much room I have to play with for widening and if it's worth it. I already have these wheels on the way too. Modern Motorsports Ltd
"Well I have the wheels on there now, they're stock. I'm just seeing how much room I have to play with for widening ..." If they're on their now...depending on your ride height you can crawl under without jacking it up at all and take all the measurements you need very easily. Most work you may have to do is back it up on some planks to raise it up and gain measurement clearance. On Sunday I just stuck a tape measure on top of my tire and measured form outside edge of tread to nearest point on strut, then width of tread itself. Difference was room I could go inward with more rim/tire. It was ~2" on my setup but I have custom spacers, coilovers, 16x8's and 5lug outback so yours will be different. I'm 99% sure 315's would clear just fine out back on my ride ........I just wish they were available in 16's or that the tire cost of 17's would drop considerably . It's not rim costs that typically bother me, it's the consumables PS if you find a local shop that'll widen them fill us in on costs.....if you want wider rims you may find another route more desirable $ wise and sizewise (tire choices in 16"+ are v. good). Resale on your wheels is typically pretty good with Z owners or dimers. [ October 30, 2001: Message edited by: Ross C ]
Sean 83ZXT
Yeah I figured resale would be easy. Plus since I don't have a garage I can have the new set professionally polished/straightened and just swap them in one without being down more than an hour. If it isn't that easy I'll look into light honda wheels, 16" panasports, or some centerlines. This may be off topic but my main reason for not getting 16's is that my speedo would be off. If I get a new fancy schmancy AutoMeter Speedo I wanna know if it has some sort of sensor or it uses the same cable the stock one does. Also does it provide a method for correction? Modern Motorsports Ltd
Their's autometer mechanical and electrical signalled speedo's, and they can be calibrated to your combo. Is their not a 16" tire combo that comes close to your stock speedo? 225/50/16 & 245/45/16 is v. close to my OEM ZX setup. I know Z's had a little smaller OEM issue tread, their are various Z diff/speedo gears available as well if you target a specific difference. Given my speedo is only really needed to be accurate at slower speeds (school zones/city driving speed traps) I'd be open to a few % in error if it allowed more fun You can recalibrate an OEM speedo as well by altering the tension of the spring steel or similar piece on the back, at least one fella did that before.....I thought of making a new guage face and altering my 120mph unit to 160mph so I'd know what speed I was doing most of the time
DavyZ
http://www.stocktonwheel.com/ Sean, one of the country's best wheel widening places is located in Stockton. I'm not sure if they do allow wheels though. Davy
