ZF Racing... Parts is Parts, Right???/

Recommended Posts

Well Thursday night Jamie T. came up from Richmond and we knocked around some ideas. We are looking at a re-design of the rear configuration down the road. My rear arms are bullet proof, but no asthetically pleasing to the eye. We'll try something different with that after I get the sets I promised out.

Jamie is a professional welder by trade, and a machinist, so I appreciate his looking over my design work. It is nice to have someone else confirm that the product is sufficiant, if not overkill!

My current plan is to finish the 4 sets I need to complete this weekend, finish the other 3 sets by next weekend, and then take a breather to get my car where it needs to be. After that, I plan to start addressing the 280ZX front design, and I'm searching for some parts to address the front and rear of the 300ZX, both first and 2nd generations! The 510 suspension is identical to the first generation Z, so I already have that model covered...

From there I'm gonna start looking at the market and try to figure out which makes and models of cars I'll be shooting for next. I suspect I can get into the import marklet, as I'm noticing few options for hondas and Mitsubishies...

I'm also considering buying the next generation Z to use for future suspension designs.. If that car takes off in sales, it could be 1970 all over again..

So tell me what you guys think about the idea... I've been off the board all week since I've been VERY busy at work, and in the garage in the evenings.

Are you sure Mike? I am not terribly up on my 510's, but I know that guys use the 280zx front struts on those all the time, and that doesn't really seem swappable to me. Also, the wagons used a solid rear axle, and I could have swore that the sedans used a semi-trailing arm setup... I could be wrong, its been known to happen. icon_wink.gif But I'd double check.

Drax,

Sorry, mis-lead you in the above post. The front control arms are VERY similar and allow for the same type of mod. I'm not about to touch the rears on a 510! I got two sets completed today and ready to ship out on Monday!

510's.......

a-arms are identical EXCEPT that a Z has a offset bushing in the front a-arm. if you are changing to heims then the spacer is different. but as far as overall dimensions they are the same. tc rods are different length AFAIK.

510 uses a smaller steering knuckle than a Z.

this is the same size as a 280zx.

510 is the same inclination in the front spindle as a ZX - thus struts are swappable.

a Z has a HUGE inclination to the front spindle no where near the same----

thats why a CHEAP upgrade for a dime is to bolt in ZX front struts, the main reason is to get vented brakes, but youalso get larger bearings as well.

rears are ALA ZX trailing arms. the x-member is where you usually slot for camber adj. toe can be done on the arm itself or in the member.

i've done a ZX rear a-arm conversion by installing heims in the arms- lots of work but could adj both toe and camber - this was a intensive mod to both the arm AND the x-member so not a easily shipped item.

Mike.. look at honda's if you are thinking of adding a Marque. for sheer volume its the place to be, maybe add FOCUS and ?? the mustang market is pretty well filled already i think
