big-phil
I'm thinking about buying this car, and building it up. But the no title part scares me. All I have to do is file for lost or stollen title, right? http://dallas.craigslist.org/car/231378702.html
pete280z
That all depends. I've got a 1971 in my garage that I've been working on getting a title on for almost 3 years. If the owner just lost the title, you'll need them to get the title (the last registration receipt might be ok too). If not, you'll need a bill of sale to get a bonded title. Be sure to check the VINs to make sure they're all there and match. You can usually call Vehicle Titles and Registration and sweet talk them into checking to see if it has been reported stolen. If the guy selling you the car never really owned it, you can get caught up in a nasty "civil" situation. I'm in that situation, and it's not fun. dmanzo57
Get the VIN number and go to the DMV and have them look it up. They can tell you if there are any liens or back fees due. I bought a '69 GMC truck with no title and since the VIN was not in the DMV records, it was easy to get a title. Good luck! Don
Dtsnlvrs
You could always get a relative or friend in a no-title state to buy it....they would only need a bill of sale to register it in their home state, AL, GA, and MS come to mind...then buy it from them (on paper of course) and take that registration to your DMV to get it titled. Sumo
You should buy mine for $650 . I think what you need to do is apply first for a verification of ownership to see who owned it before and if there are any leins on it but im not sure. You can always go to the tax office and ask them and they usually point you in the right direction. Here is a link to the forms they have online, hope it helps. http://www.dot.state.tx.us/forms/vehicle_titles.htm
pete280z
Here's the people you want to talk to about title history, bonded titles, the works (assuming you're in Tarrant County): http://www.dot.state.tx.us/services/vehicle_titles_and_registration/regional_offices/regional_office.htm?reg=fw Whenever I've called they have been very willing to help. Unfortunately my car also has a criminal aspect to it, so I wound up on the phone with Tarrant County Auto Theft Task Force pretty quickly. From there bad went to worse. Oldestzguy
Make friends with a used car dealer. They have access to everything and know about how to get all kinds of titles. In Fl the program that accesses the state database is called "Tag talk" and you need a dealer's license to obtain use the program.
