Guest moonbiker
Hi guys! Hope u can help me with this little pickle I'm in... Summary: I drive a 1980 280zx 2+2 with an RB25DET Auto tranny. Issue: Recently, my auto gearbox started slipping (couldn't get 1st gear) and i changed to a used gear box unit for the same engine model. Tried and tested it at the workshop and it was fine...later the 1st gear went 'missing' i.e. the gear indicator never lighted up to show 'D' (or any of the other positions) and i couldn't boost or get 1st gear (2nd and 3rd were fine at 100km/h and above). ...but 3 days later, everything suddenly started working perfectly - i.e. the gears appeared on the indicator, could boost, had a great time. Now, the freaky thing is - i have actually changed the gearbox twice! (due to my concerns on reliability with the first replacement) - and on both incidents, the same pattern of events occured (i.e. not fine in the beginning, totally fine 3 days later). A friend of mine says its not the gearbox (mechanicals) problem and suggests it could be the electronics of the gearbox. I would appreciate if anybody who has encountered a similar situation could enlighten me on what to do about this issue. Thanks in advance! Mr.INSANE
Whats the difference between the gearbox electronics and the gearbox? Oh i forgot nothing automatic transmissions are pretty mechanical actually. there arent as many electronics as youd think Could just be bad luck A simple oil change could remedy the problem but i really have no background with autos
Guest moonbiker
Thanks for the speedy reply...and to state the obvious...im actually an ex-biker noob (broke me leg, hadda get into a car) - thus, am somewhat ignorant about the fact that there is no such thing as gearbox electronics (was just quoting what a friend told me - I wouldnt know the difference on my own). Regarding the oil change, tried that already...the 'assurance of reliability' lasted all of 1 hour (of course, the gearbox hadda screw up just as i got too far from the mechs place to turn back). Even with new, fresh, virginal oil, th egearbox played the 'now u seem me work, now u don't' game with me. Am at my wit's end (and my mech's not too happy changing three gearboxes in the space of one month). Looking forward to more ideas soon! RB26powered74zcar
Glad to have you aboard, but I don't think to many folks here has experience with the RB25 auto trans use, so I'd suggest maybe checking in on some of the sites that are more familiar with this trans. Not trying to run you off, but I'd try asking over on Nico> http://forums.nicoclub.com/zeroforum/68 or > http://www.240sxforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&f=42&page=1&pp=25&sort=lastpost&order=desc&daysprune=60 they might be able to help you out. Someone who visits here may read this and help sooner or later..... Anyhoo, good luck with it - joel .
Guest moonbiker
Thanks Joel, Went to the recommended site, found out that it could be a solenoid problem...will discuss with my mech at the earliest opportunity. Thanks for the tip! And no worries...will continue to look through hybridz for valuable nuggets of information and enlightenment. Cheers!
