I need REAL brakes

I need to know wat are the best brakes to put on a 280z with a SBC for road racing. Should I convert to 5 lug and get some type of stockcar braking system. Or will some of the 4 lug upgrades be adequate?

I went road racing. Turned fast, drove fast, did not have brakes after on lap of hard driving. they were the weak link.

What are your closing speeds? ie. 150mph to 60mph or 100-50mph? Road racing only.....30 minute lapping day sessions or wheel to wheel racing....depending on your needs a strong caliper with large Hawk pads on an 11" rotor would be fine, greater needs can use bigger brakes....12's, 13's etc. Email me if interested in prototyping one of my systems. The 13's I've run on my ZX and are shortly available for Z's. An 11' alternative will be out shortly as well. These projects are on hold though until the rear CNC disk brake and CV adaptors have been produced (CV's this week and rear disk slated for next week!).

Ross,

On the track where I ran on the fast strait the approaching speed could be 150 +. I went up to 7000 rpm in 3rd with a 3.90 gear and had to let off at the middle of the strait and start braking in order to slow down enough to make the corner. If I went to 3.55 gears or higher gears I may reach that speed.

On slower approachs I still had to lift early in order to who the horses in time. The brakes were shot in about a lap but were fine until they overheated. Not really fine but adequate. OK after the session they were toast. I drove the car back hme with a very soft pedal.

I dont know anythig about brakes. I do know how to fix them replace them bleed them etc. But as for the requirement or swapping non stock parts I dont know anything. YET

Any help appreciated.

look at what other cars are using in your class. for road racing (real road racing) you will need a good 4 piston caliper with a 1.25" thick curved vane vented rotor.

ALL SCCA road race cars in GT5 thru to GT1 use a similar setup. the rotor size is based on class rules and/or your rim size.

there is no need for 5 lug if you have rims that you want to keep. the main reason to go to 5 lug is for rim choices.

i use a late model stock car setup. those cars are 3200lb and 700HP.

all comes down to $, the next step up from outlaw or wilwood calipers would be to Brembos.

theres a ton of brake info on here - there was a post a while back of a S2000 brake kit. NICE setup with brembos about $2800. the range is from $500 to $7000 per axle.

Bubbafet,

I'm using the Outlaw 12.2 inch 1.25" thick rotor with Outlaw 4000 calipers that Mike SCCA sells. However, Ross is looking for someone to test his new setup... Might want to take him up on it. For what its worth, I'm real happy with what I got from Mike.

Heh, I've got MikeSCCA's braking setup too icon_smile.gif My only complaint is that getting the rotors warm is hard - they cool so quickly! Obviously this is just street driving and a softer pad would help but for the track these puppies would be awesome!

One of these days the NVA guys are going to have to get together and attend one of these things - I've never done ANY track time and I think it ouwl dbe flat out awesome to go out and just play some.

Who can sell me the Ross or Mike set up and how much for a bolt on set up? Or I will be happy to be the gimmie pig. Gimmie the brakes and I'll go racing. Then all I will need is some big tires for more "gription".

bubafett: I dropped you an email with a couple options from $600-800+. I prefer to discuss $ transactions offlist rather than take up board bandwidth. At least one thought my 'prototype'use meant near free.....it doesn't. It just means an opportunity to enjoy a new product at less than retail value in my usage of the term. As usual my web and email box is always open. Thanks for the interest.

psst, your email address bounced as unknown bubafett
