Guest timhypo
OK guys, my first real post. I've been reading for months and think I'm now ready both financially and effort-wise to build a Z8. I've found a good rust-free '76 280z without any issues other than the stabilizer bar. The car's about 5 hours from my house and I'd like to go buy it and drive it home. The owner says it needs a stabilizer bar and won't drive without it. DO I buy a used stabilizer bar and go buy it? Or is this indicative of larger suspension problems? Help me here. You guys are wise.
fl327
depends on what he means by stabilizer bar, if its a front or rear sway bar, you can still drive it.
Guest timhypo
Yeah, I don't really understand what the heck he's talking about. Is there anything else under there that could be mistaken for a stabilizer bar? The car looks like a great deal other than that.
Guest Anonymous
Timhypo - Welcome to the HybridZ world! I don't post very often, but I'm in here constantly and I'm getting closer to finishing my '76 Anyway, if that Z happens to be 5 hours West... say towards southern IL I'll be happy to go take a look at it for ya and see what's go'n on with the "stabilizer bar". In any case - Good Luck! - Match
Guest timhypo
It's actually in the Chicago area. I'd be more than willing to pay for your time if you're headed that way.
DavyZ
Perhaps he means a tie rod? Like proZak said, if it really is a front anti-sway bar, the car can be driven safely without it (but don't overdo a corner mind you) and you should have no problem just cruising down the freeway. Is there anyway he can send you a picture via email of what he is talking about? Just food for thought. Oh yeah, welcome to the forum!!! Guest timhypo
I'll check with him on that. I might just go with a rust-free needs-paint, but runs fine '73 240z only 4 hours from my house. I like the 280 though as the trans tunnels are a bit wider in those and I'm hoping to run a t56. Thanks for your input guys. PS - I know a guy with 2 280s in cincy, one of which is a 'parts car' even though they both have nasty floors if anyone needs stuff. Maybe I'll just buy a sway bar from him and take it with me. TimZ
Yes, it's driveable, but if it's really missing the front swaybar, then the car will be prone to oversteer. You should exercise caution in driving it until you can get a new bar...
johnc
Imagine this scenario: New used car (condition suspect) No front anti-roll bar Snowing and windy leaving Chicago Man, all you need are four bald tires...
Guest Anonymous
Chicago, it's COLD up there! Sorry, but I'm not head'n that way any time soon. (3-4 hr. drive) I do have a parts car that came from Chi town... I think the glass even found a way to rust up there in the windy city. Maybe next time. Again, good luck. - Match

Guest Anonymous
Could be one of the front suspension's tension rods which could make the car unsafe to drive. The sway bar is nothing to worry about but under certain circumstances if that tension rod is missing on a worn out front suspension could be fatal.
