VQ reliability

Alot of questions have been asked about the vq35's reliability. some say the engine is laughable in comparison to the tried and true vg30dett and vg30et. well i have a z31 that i have been looking into giving the old hybridz treatment with a vq swap. I found a few things interesting about the engine, the fact it has a chain for timing ect. well i digress, over on my350z.com they tested the limits of the vq35 from a 04 g35. (non revup).

heres a link that should end the naysaying for a little bit.

Car Dynoed at 518rwhp @ 12PSI on 93 Octane….

To really test the car we ran it at 14PSI! On 100octane at the track…ALL DAY

usually this car ran with water/methanol injection. this was not present on the day it finally died under an abusive track day. the thing they have stated a million times over is that this was using the best parts available and arguably the best vq35 tuner in the country. on a related note most recommend not taking the car over 430whp or 400wtq. Not perfect but not bad plus the engine is alot lighter than the vg. on the upside the vg's have a greater knowledge base.

I personally believe the VQ has even more potential than the VG once its been built up. Stock for stock I know the VG will hold out a little longer but, regardless of having an aluminum block, the VQ can definitely make some insane numbers as has been proven. I'm not sure why most people can't believe that.

its a shame..

i mean it does have the advantages of 10yrs of technology, weight and having the vg as a template to improve along. i love(d) my vgs over the past few years. I've owned 3 vg30e's and i abused them all. i drove with a blown radiator just under 100 miles, with stops, before it died. if that isn't worth something idk what is. very brick house.

MM, when you say the VQ 'went', what exactly happened?

The thing is with engine design, newer is not always better from a performance/durability aspect. Anti pollution requirements now are paramount in engine design, without going into detail that influence usually results in less performance and/or compramised durability, the open deck design of the VQ is an obvious example of this.

On the question of weight, an aluminium block does not guarantee overall lighter weight, what exactly does a VQ weigh? A rough check of a VG30DE indicates around 150kg with flywheel and manifolds.

Chains over belts are a plus though :)

From what I hear, its lighter than the SR20DE but I have no solid info to back that up. All I know is there was someone who swapped a VQ35 into a 240SX after having an SR20 and the front end of the car was slightly higher with the VQ, no spring changes.
