74_5.0L_Z
I use my car for autocross, street, and some drag. I am currently using 250# spring in the rear(10 in free length), and 200# springs in the front(10 in free length). I am very happy with this set-up. The car has a 1" sway bar up front, and none in the rear. I disconnected the rear sway bar because I don't have a posi. Here are my suggestions: 1. If you have a posi, use 225# rear springs, and a rear sway bar. Use 200# front springs. 2. If you don't have a posi, then use 250# rear springs, no rear sway bar, and 200# front springs. auxilary
i have 200lb springs on all 4 corners on GC coilovers, 10" long, 2.5" diameter eibachs that come with GC coilovers. These are mated with tokiko illumina 5 way struts, 1" front sway bar at the moment. Rear sway is not in yet, but it's the 7/8" msa solid one. I am still in process of figuring out the right settings, but setting the rear struts to 1 or 2 levels more than the front is sufficient enough to make the car neutral. I will probably have to bring the rear setting down a notch when the rear sway goes in. this is on a non-lsd r200
DavyZ
Auxilary's car rides very nicely (stiff, but not too harsh) with the spring rates he just mentioned. Of course, he has also replaced just about every bushing there is, so there are no rattles or 'crashing' noises when going over bumps. Just my $.02. Guest Anonymous
do you guys recommend sectioning the struts? or is stock strut length okay, i dont want to bottom out. also if i do section should i still use 10" length springs for the coilovers? Guest Anonymous
Using 10 inch coilovers, a 2 inch section of the 280 Z strut tubes should get you a maximum of a 4 inch drop with upward threaded adjustment. With no sectioning of the strut tube , should get you at least a two inch drop with upward threaded adjustment. A two inch section of the front strut tube will require a 80's VW GTI front strut cartridge. A two inch section of the rear strut tube will require the use of the 280Z front strut cartridge moved to the rear and about a 1 1/8 inch spacer placed in the bottom of the tube to take up the slack of the shorter strut catrtridges. The 10 inch coilovers are ideal since you remove the stock spring perch on the strut tubes leaving it's weld bead around the diameter of the tube which allows the coilover perch to rest on top of it. To section 2 inches you cut one inch on either side of the spring perch weld bead and then connect the two pieces by welding which leaves a new weld bead to rest the large washer spring perch on for the coilovers. If your springs are 200#'s plus there should ne no bottoming and apparently little strut travel is lost by sectioning. I would recomend using 5 inch threaded sleeves when sectioning 2 inches because the sleeve is level to the top of the strut tube and you will have a little more upward adjustment than by using the 4 inch which is adequete with no sectioning. For a street car there is little need to section unless you want it to go real lowdown. Apparently Datsun springs are comparable to about 120 # coilovers
Guest Anonymous
let me see if i totally understand the section process, cut the stock spring perch off, now i need to cut 2" off the strut tubing but i still want the threaded part that mounts to the gland nut correct? so i cut 2" off the opposite end, then i reweld the tube on? okay? now i install that little ring that holds the aluminum sleeve for the coilover on? how far down do i put that thing with a 5 inch sleeve. anyways sleeve is on now for strut i need to put a spacer IN the strut to compensate for the small strut then i guess the rabbit gti gland nut doesnt fit, so i need to mill some insolator to get it to fit??? so 5" sleeve, 10" coil. 2" section. this is only in regards to the front struts. can i get 5way adjustable tokico's with the rabbit gti struts? with a 2" section how long is the spacer and whats the diameter? its a 73 240z i really appriecate the help
Guest Anonymous
Havok my experince is with 280 Z's. I would not section more than 2 inches and 1 1/2 maybe better.Use the Datsun gland nuts I would take the front strut assembly to an auto parts store and trial fit the GTI illumina's to see how much to section I did Nezzie 76's and sectioned his front strut to the specifications (2 inches) of my application which was a VW KYB GR2 and fit like a glove. I was 1/8 inch short on his, since his gland nut was about 1/8 inch thicker in the top section..We salvaged the perch washer and had to borrow another strut assembly from my collection. Trial fit your parts first

Guest Anonymous
I trial fitted mine at a parts store and got the number (#364014 GR2 KYB) and bought a set off E- Bay for a lot less than $49.95 a piece. There is also a smaller VW strut # 361005 KYB that maybe appropriate for a 240 Z. Watch the part stores in getting the right application. Illumina'a are top
