Toyota Brake Upgrade Problems???

Recommended Posts

I've been hearing that the Toyota caliper upgrade will not fit on early Z's with the '81 ZX Turbo wheels (the Honeycomb/Snowflakes). Something about the caliper rubbing on the wheels. Anyone experienced this or have any info? I was getting ready to do the switch, but now I'm holding. I've searched, but cant find any past references.

Thanks

The problem stems from the fact that non-floating calipers that use pistons on both sides of the rotor take up a lot of space to house those pistons on the outside of the rotor. Floating calipers have no piston on the outside of the rotor, thus the amount of space or room needed on the outside of the rotor is much smaller. So if you have a rotor designed for a floater (it will have minimal offset), and then install non-floater calipers (which use rotors with larger offsets) on it will require (for the most part) either a spacer between hub and wheel to keep the spokes of the wheel off caliper, or the use of wheels designed for such (which spokes push outboard to clear the calipers. Basically you want to get the floater and non-floater calipers with their appropriate rotors.

The spacers Terry refer's to can be got at your local Kragen/Chucks/Pep dudes/Autozone sort of places, look in the suspension/lug nutz/tire accessories area. They're generally 1/8-1/4" spacers.

I was running 14" steel rims with scca's (Mike) Toyo brake upgrade. I had to use a 1/4" spacer in the front. Run a search for lug studs. You will need longer studs to accomidate the lose. I think I bought the stock "rear lug studs" from a 95' Nissan Quest Mini-Van. They are the same pattern all around (i.e. thread, dia., spline, backing) they are just 1/4" loner. :D

They fit just right and work great. Oh!! Be sure to torque the lugs after the first 20 miles. Then again at 40 and 60! No joke! The alum. spacer will expand and contract at diffrent temps than the steel hub and it will losen. My wheel almost fell off. This is a very bad thing! Don't let it happen to you.
