240z Caliper weight - stock vs. toyota

Recommended Posts

I was changing my front calipers this weekend and considering all the talk of the weight gain from the toyotas, I thought I'd weigh them to check it out.

The stock caliper weighs 9 lbs and the toyota weighs 11.1 lbs. After reading a few posts I expected to see a broader margin between them. With one in each hand, it's hard to tell them apart weight-wise, although I guess that some could say this 4.2 lb unsprung increase translates to 17 lbs of sprung weight up front.

This makes me wonder how much the lighter cross-drilled rotors are as all those extra holes might compensate somewhat for the weight gain in the calipers.

I hope these numbers are helpful either way you go... 2thumbs.gif

The point is I think that caliper weight is dead weight that performs no useful function, while extra rotor weight does increase the rotor's heat sink capacity. While a lot of people don't like cross drilled rotors, it seems to me that cross drilling should improve the rotors ability to dissipate heat and that a proper brake warm up procedure before heavy track use should reduce any cracking tendancy.

I must admit that the caliper weight difference is less than I would have expected though

Me too, when I pulled the loaded toyota calipers I bought out of the box they seemed to weight a ton, but the stock ones were pretty heavy to, Im surpised at the small difference really.

Oh I don't question that at all. They are great, worth the money, but not a budget upgrade thats for sure. :D
