How much do worn tires affect braking?

Interesting article. Although it's clearly a bit self-serving for TireRack, if they followed the procedure as they described, even at 4/32" of tread left there is a very significant degradation of braking performance. Typical new tires have about 7-9/32" of tread so replacing tires earlier at 4/32" is A LOT sooner. And even at 4/32" the braking performance was pretty poor.

Probably the best answer is to leave more distance in front in the wet!
