robrsx
OK here goes.... done with my L28 NA engine got it in the car already... It is a N42 Block with an N42 Head. Converted the auto tranny to a manual from a manual 1980 280zx donor car. From the 280ZX I have a N42 Block and a N47 Head. this is my question, I would like to use either the motor i have in the car now to add a turbo (and yes I did a lot of research on engine managment and what head to use) but it has been done with this block. I guess the whole issue is can the N47 Head be built up to with stand a turbo build up or should I go with the N42. I know I would have to aquire the Turbo and the Manifold, intercooler, bigger injectors and so on but I would really like to build up the N42 Block with the N47 head because I have a car that needs to be smoged every two years and my plan was to swap out engines from mod to NA then back to mod engine after the smog check. I have all the tools the engine hoist and the can do, its just the build of the mototr and the electrical wireing. now with the turbo If i do not change out the computer can i just do a stand alone with a megasquirt with the bigger injectors so when i do the swap back to the NA motor than I don't have to much to worry about electrical. also with the piping i will fab it so that I can remove it when I do the NA swap. ok so 1. can I do the stand alone megasquirt for the fuel management so I dont have to mess with the electrical. 2. The build up on the N47 head..good or not good.. 3. most important question is can I make this conversion good enough to make it a smog legal turbo engine so I don't have to keep doing the swap. I know alot of you guys will say just get the donor car with turbo already and just swap it out but believe me i have looked and nada.. so my other option is to do this. all advices will help me out big time.. thank you guys in advance. cygnusx1
1) yes. 2) should work for low to mild boost. depends mainly on CR and cam choice. 3) You can make a turbo motor run clean. How clean? I dont know. worth a try. use a few good cat's. Definitely dont swap in and out an engine for every smog test. That's nuts.
