ZR8ED
Just throwing this one out as well. All this talk of mods to front suspension brings me this question. People here have custom modded rear suspensions.. live axels, jag and vet suspensions. Anyone tried a upper and lower a arm setup for the front?. A lot of kit car guys use mustang 2 front suspensions with coilovers on the street rods, and cobra kits etc.. I happen to know the guy who posted on here a while back about widening his suspension track by 8" plus on each side. He wants to put on this wild wild custom body on the car, and needs to bring the wheels out to the edge of the wheel wells. The guy who did my engine install, is looking into modding this guys car, and is also looking for options. I figured a live axel rear is simple for the rear. (car is 300zxt 2+2 with a LT1 and T5/6 manual tranny) but how to widen the front track is a pain.. (moving stock mounts and using the stock suspension as much as possible) BUT a mustang 2 set up would be easy to fab mounts for.. is widely used by kit cars... the suspension geomotry is pretty good (I think).. Anyone tried this ? or know of a link? I'm kinda rambling here.. sorry.. too much info..too many options too many Q's. Any info or opinions are welcome. Just trying to help a fellow Z'r Thanks. Guest AlsoRanFPrepared
The question is why do you want to mod the front suspension? What is the purpose of the car. Too many times people perform mods without asking the most important question of "What is this cars purpose going to be?" Widening the car by 8" each side is pretty darn extreme. What is he trying to do with this car? The only reason I can see that someone would widen the car by that much is trying to improve the cornering performance somewhat by improving the lateral load distribution. Forget trying to autocross this thing. Being that fat will also make it more difficult to pass on a racetrack. From a drag racing standpoint the additional weight will definitely be a burden. I do not see adding a Mustang II front setup as being a good performance option. It will be easier and will have the geometry for a good street rod but it's not a true performence setup. Really, 8" is a tad too much. If the car is just for boulevard pimping or otherwise looking strange then the Mustang II is perfect for this application. -Mark
ZR8ED
Will be a boulevard cruiser I suppose.. Mainly a show car. Yea I know it sounds pretty extreme... even for me.
ZROSSA
I have never tried this, but here is a idea. I guy i meet once put a chev into a ford escort. This is the old english one with rear wheel drive. He useda sub frame from the front of a holden torana to get rid of the struts and make more room. So here is the idea, find a car that has a front crossmember and subframe that has the suspension bolted to it and us it. I think maybe the early f body (?) cars were like this. That might be a hell of a lot easier then custom fabrication the lot. Douglas
260DET
Good thinking, Douglas. The donor Xmember could be cut and shut to widen it if required.
