ive located a 78 280Z owned by an individual that works in the parts dept. for a nissan dealership. he has had the car for 4 years. he has replaced the struts and springs, replaced the bushings, put in a new exhaust system, put in new injectors, new drums, rotors and calipers. according to him he has reworked the car except for the motor and interior. he says its a solid car with no rust except a bubble in the paint on the rear behind the wheel well. he says the car will not run now, he thinks a bad relay is the problem. it gets fire but no fuel. he has replaced the fuel pump. it is a five speed and he says he will include a crank and pistons for converting it to a stroker. 5500.00 is his asking price. he said he has put about 4000.00 in the car. is his asking price in the ballpark and should i go and take a look at it?

I 3rd the way too much.

But I paid way too much for mine, still haven't driven it, but i'm not kicking myself in the ass for the purchase...(yet).

So if there's something about the car that really makes it special to you, go for it.

Otherwise, buy a better example for a better price, $5500 will get you a lot of Z Car.

$5500 puts you into the price range of an almost finished hybrid.

Good rule of thumb is most non-running cars are worth less than $1000. The only thing that would sway that (for me anyway) is if there were a lot of aftermarket parts included. It doesnt sound like there are for this car. I'd say that price is ridiculously high. No reason not to at least look at it, though.

I agree with Mrfancypants regarding the non-running vehicle price guideline of $1k. I don't recall you saying if the struts and springs are aftermarket performance units or stock replacements. Same with the bushings. If this guy works at a dealership, let him get it running, then it's much more worth looking at. Most of the members on this site with experience will agree that if there is one rust bubble on a car, there's more where that came from. If you're goal is to have a super clean car, you'll end up doing a complete repaint of the car with untold repairs required. I would bet that you can find one for $5500 that is pretty straight in the paint department, as well as everywhere else!
